Postfix won't start after fresh install

Hi there, after installing a fresh copy of the operating system (debian squeeze x86_64 on a multi-cpu server) from my provider I installed virtualmin gpl with the install.sh script.

There is no error message during install. After installation I point to my adress and answer the last questions. After that I have to reload the virtualmin configuration. But this is saying:

"The Postfix server does not appear to be installed on your system, or has not yet been set up properly in Webmin's Postfix Configuration module. If you are running a different mail server, select it on the module configuration page."

Postfix IS installed (It was installed by the virtualmin script I think). When I go to the postfix configuration it say's: "Error while checking current Postfix configuration. Please manually fix Postfix configuration.

postsuper: fatal: scan_dir_push: open directory hold: Permission denied"

The folder is present and the config files are within /etc/postfix. Just to find the issue I chmod'ded to 777 -R /etc/postfix but still it say's permission denied.

I've installed another webserver yesterday going the same way and all went fine. The only differences are the filesystem and partitioning scheme, and maybe the one or another reboot after install (but I rebootet after kernel update BOTH systems). No meaning where the problem is.

Any help would be very nice. I can also paste needed logfiles.

With best regards

Howdy,

Hmm, it looks like you're seeing a configuration issue of some sort... that's pretty unusual on a fresh install.

My guess is that the permissions problem is related to the mail queue, rather than /etc/postfix.

What output do you get if you run these two commands as root:

/etc/init.d/postfix stop
postfix start

Manually starting Postfix like the above should generate some additional output that may better show what's going on.

Thanks for your answer.

Postfix seems to go crazy :(

/etc/init.d/postfix stop Stopping Postfix Mail Transport Agent: postfix.

postfix start postsuper: fatal: scan_dir_push: open directory hold: Permission denied postfix/postfix-script: fatal: Postfix integrity check failed!

postfix check and postsuper -sv are saying the same.

After some Googling, I ran into this post by the Postfix author containing a potential fix:

http://irbs.net/internet/postfix/0505/1337.html

Try running the command "postfix set-permissions" as root, and once it's done, see if you can launch postfix with "/etc/init.d/postfix start".

The log file it say what is wrong: SFTPHostKey: unable to use '/etc/ssh/ssh_host_rsa_key' as host key

First your should not necro 5 years old topic with a problem what doesnt have anything to do with postfix what was the original subject. The solution for your problem was recently posted on this forum by me so use search or open new topic if you want direct help.

People should learn that necroing old topics doesnt do any good for them or anyone else who might have same problem and looking for a solution.

How recent is recent? I found one using a site wide search for January. But nothing more recent. I went and changed the user:group to root:root instead of root:ssh keys. I guess that didnt work so I will change it back.

As far as starting another thread, I try to find previous posts instead of making someone answer the same question twice.

I did a lot of googling to find the solution. Came up with nothing clear cut and obvious.

You should discuss that with google or invest invest in software that will inform the poster that the current thread has not been accessed in a certain amount of time to be determined by you. If we (surfers) had to search for post dates on every forum post that we come across on a daily basis, we would be wasting a lot of time. If the thread is not longer valuable, then perhaps some housekeeping could eliminate it.

But you are correct...I did mess up and post in the wrong thread. I was confusing postfix with proftp, but caught my mistake right away and edited the post.

I dont recall seeing a search feature in the forum, but I will revisit that if you say it is there.

Steve

edit: I cant find any way to search this forum.

Howdy,

There is a search button at the bottom of the page, you can use that to search the Forums.

All threads are potentially relevant or useful, even threads from 2011, so we aren't going to remove old ones. However, if a thread is older than a year it's generally best to just start a new one rather than adding to an old one. The thread dates are included in the search results.
