Create Virtual Sub-server and WWW problem

Hello:

Currently running v3.55. My problem happens when I go to try to create a virtual sub-server on an existing domain.

For example, if I try to create FRED.EXAMPLE.COM as a sub-server of EXAMPLE.COM by being in the EXAMPLE.COM virtualmin menu and then clicking 'Create Virtual Server' and then 'Sub-server', when I try to surf to FRED.EXAMPLE.COM, it comes up with an 'Address Not Found' error. If I prepend www to it (ie www.fred.example.com), it surfs to it fine. The domain just created is associated with the parent domain correctly, however.

Now, if I go and create a virtual server and leave it as a top-level server, but name the top level server FRED.EXAMPLE.COM, I can surf to fred.example.com fine, but it's no longer associated with example.com in the virtualmin interface.

Ideally, I'd like to be able to create sub-domains off top-level domains that are both associated with their parent domain in the virtualmin interface (so I can easily copy and paste template files from the TLD to the subdomain in the file interface) AND not have to prepend WWW to the url. Help, and thanks!

Hey Ryan,

It shouldn't do that :-)

Can you try creating the sub-server again, associating it with the parent domain?

And after you do so, can you email me the resulting Apache and DNS configurations (you can send those to eric@virtualmin.com -- and include a link to this forum post in the email)?

Where those files are depends on your distro --

Ubuntu/Debian
-------------
Apache: /etc/apache2/sites-enabled/domain-name.com.conf
BIND: /etc/bind/domain-name.com.hosts

RHEL/CentOS
-----------
Apache: /etc/httpd/conf/httpd.conf
BIND: /var/named/chroot/var/named/domain-name.com.hosts

Also, while this shouldn't be an issue -- in theory -- the Virtualmin version you're running is from back in April, you might consider upgrading that :-)

Thanks for the quick reply! I'll talk to my hosting provider and see if I can get the files you mentioned.

Ryan.

I have had similar issues with sub-servers.
Looking in the appr. files it had the correct settings.
After a few hours suddenly sub.server.com was working without www
It seemed some propagation (dns) issues that time resolved automatically.
this is in my case obviously and might not apply to others

I suspect this depends on whether you create a new zone for subdomain names or use the same parent domain. The same parent domain is probably going to work more immediately.

I probably wasn't as clear as I should have been on that. I mean that Virtualmin can create a new DNS zone, or it can use the existing one. Using the existing one is going to be faster.

The option is "Add sub-domain DNS records to parent domain?" in the BIND DNS Domain section of Server Templates.

Same here. Virtual Sub-Server isn't answering right away but is answering after 1 hour or so.

Maybe DNS propagation.

Yeah, it definitely shouldn't do that, but I hadn't heard back from Ryan so I'm not sure if/how he was able to resolve it.

What version of Virtualmin are you using, and on what distribution?

Also, if you could attach the files mentioned above, that'd be a great help.

Thanks,
-Eric

Same here. I posted a solution that worked for me at: https://www.virtualmin.com/node/9546

Search for the comment posted on June 26, 2009 and titled "Solution - Edit sub-server template".
