error during installation

[root@nmctest vm]# ./install.sh

Welcome to the Virtualmin GPL installer, version EA5.0

WARNING: This is an Early Adopter release.

The installation is quite stable and functional when run on a freshly installed supported Operating System, but upgrades from existing .wbm- based systems, or systems that already have Apache VirtualHost directives or mail users, will very likely run into numerous problems. Please read the Virtualmin and Early Adopter FAQs before proceeding if your system is not a freshly installed and supported OS.

This script is not intended to update your system! It should only be used to install Virtualmin Professional, on a supported OS. If you have previously installed Virtualmin via this script or the GPL version of this script, upgrades and updates should be handled within Virtualmin itself. Once Virtualmin is installed, you never need to run this script again.

The systems currently supported by install.sh are: CentOS 4 and 5 on i386 and x86_64 Debian 4.0 on i386 and amd64 Ubuntu 8.04 LTS on i386 and amd64

If your OS is not listed above, this script will fail. More details about the systems supported by the script can be found here:

Fedora 5 is not supported by the GPL version of the installer. And, Fedora 5 has already been end-of-lifed by the Fedora project for quite some time--it is not suitable for server usage, as it is very likely to have numerous unpatched security holes (and if it doesn't today, it will in the future, since no one is maintaining the OS).

See the OS support page, as mentioned during the installation, for details of what operating systems we support and recommend.

Of course, the install script also said quite clearly that it won't work on your system:

The systems currently supported by install.sh are:
CentOS 4 and 5 on i386 and x86_64
Debian 4.0 on i386 and amd64
Ubuntu 8.04 LTS on i386 and amd64

If your OS is not listed above, this script will fail. More details
about the systems supported by the script can be found here:

I did visit the OS Support page before even beginning installation.

<div class='quote'>
Grade B Supported Systems
Grade B systems have one or more minor problems that make them less desirable for use with Virtualmin. We do support them, both in our automated installer, and via the software updates repository, but they will likely be less comfortable for long-term use on a server and we don't recommend them. Usually, the problems with these systems are due to short life-cycle or issues with package management.

* RHEL 4 on i386 and x86_64
* Fedora 5, 6, 7 and 8 on i386 and x86_64
* FreeBSD 7.0-RELEASE on all i386 and x86_64 (notes)
* Solaris 10 and OpenSolaris 10 on Sparc and x86
</div>

I assumed that beings Fedora 5 is listed that the install script should work.

Retry:

&quot;Only CentOS 4 and 5, Debian 4.0 and Ubuntu 8.04 LTS on i386 and x86_64/amd64 are supported for automated installation of Virtualmin GPL at this time.&quot;

I guess I need to make it more clear that Virtualmin GPL has only a subset of available install targets. We're trying to guide people into not making mistakes in OS choice, though we're less pushy about it with folks who are paying us. ;-)

But, Fedora is never suitable for servers because it has too short of a lifecycle--only 18 months. Fedora 5 probably shouldn't even be on the list of supported systems for Professional, anymore, as our policy is to only support systems that are supported by the vendor or community that maintains the OS. As mentioned, Fedora 5 is no longer supported by the Fedora folks, so you can't really safely run it any more.

So, I'll update that page to be more clear about Virtualmin GPL and remove Fedora 5 (even though Virtualmin Professional will still install successfully on Fedora 5, we definitely do not recommend it).

As this is just a test machine that we are using to familiarize ourselves with webmin/virtualmin, we are not too concerned whether or not the vendor supports the OS that is already on this box. Production installations will actually be done with the pro version, and on CentOS.

I did manage to go through the manual installation rather than using the automated script. So at least it is up and running now :)
