Email forwarding to same domain not working

Hi all,

I am trying to setup email forwarding but what I need does not seem to work.

Lets say my domain is exampledomain.com.

I want to setup a forwarding rule that says any email going to support@exampledomain.com is forwarded to craig@exampledomain.com. I cannot get this to work.

I can however get support@exampledomain.com to forward to craig@gmail.com but for some reason will not forward to an email with the same domain.

Has anyone experienced this before and found a solution?

Any help would be greatly appreciated.

Thanks in advance.

Craig

Take a look at real email and usernames. Also alias names and so on.

So if you have a emailuser who asigned to more then that only craig emailadress , but also the alias support or... as example to explain.

Further als spam dkim / dmarc / spf rules should be ok for that domain and complete box, you could find for that then in logs some info if not and tried to send / forward.

Hi jfro,

Thanks for your reply.

Are you saying I have to create a real user? I just want to create an alias and forward it. I have confirmed it works but it just wont forward to another email in the same domain.

Cheers Craig

I don't know the mailsystem virtualmin

But if alias is in real the same as the user craig for example, you send mail to alias then it is to user / craigs mail, so a forward then to again craig is ..... ;)

Alias is wen for user and no forward ( to other mailadresses) as i understand it comming in the mailbox for that default user as a default setting.

Sorry i don't know the GUI for that part virtualmin but is my gues.

So if not there must be a other settings for that somewhere but i expect if using a alias for a mailuser , ( to receive in that mailbox for that user is not setting by the forward emailto...

Thanks jfro. There should be no problem setting up an alias and it forwarding to any email address even when there are no users in the system, as long as I own the domain I should be able to add forwarding rules.

As you say there must be a setting somewhere, I just can't find it. Thank you for your help.

It should be no problem to create an alias that sends an email to other domains on the same server.

What problem are you experiencing when you try that? When forwarding "support@" to " craig@exampledomain.com", what issue comes up? If you're getting an error, what error are you seeing?

And are you able to send an email directly to "craig@exampledomain.com"?

Hi Eric, thanks for your comment.

I get a very delayed email saying the email is undeliverable with the text "Your message couldn't be delivered. Despite repeated attempts to deliver your message, querying the Domain Name System (DNS) for the recipient's domain location information failed". If I change the forward to an email not on the same domain (craig@hotmail.com for example) the email addressed to 'support@exampledomain.com' delivers with no problem, just having issues with emails on the same domain.

Thanks Craig

Yup but if that user / craig emailadres is in reality the same as the alias itself is.

I can image that doesn't work.

That is akind like forwarding a email to it's own same email adres.. Other parts could be the filtering as with/on: DKIM, DMARC,SPF with DNS and so, and some have wrong settings results, then blocked ofcourse.

Other thing the craig@yourdomain.tld is that again forwarded to some other? ( that is sometimes giving trouble also here with the filtering somewhere, here at receiving part on other server and domain, strange but not all emails are going wrong only from some locations with header.... are then handled as not allowed, not important here to check we solved that another way, but if filtering maybe whitelisting could help )

So in common forwarding could have problems with allowed and filtering while not all headers for that are set always as expected! ( If then a kind of 2 times forwarding as alias and the first forwarded adres again a forward is asking for some troubles in mail world.)
