Subscription to Vmin - gone.

Ha there Joe, I seem to have fallen out of the system! Am having weird problems with accessing Vmin on my Server and came in to check on my account expiry. I don't exist! Am thinking that maybe this is the reason I can access via Webmin but not Vmin????

I can't recall how long I've had the account - never really got it to go yet, but it is a looong time! :-)

Are you/do you send reminders?

I think I'm about ready to really start......... really!

Cheers!

Hey John,

I've answered via email, but figured I'd respond here, too, just in case anyone else finds themselves confused in just this way. Your purchase was made with a different email address than the one you're not logging in with.

I can reset the password for that account for you (if you don't remember it), and once logged in, you can change the email address to whatever you like (though you won't be able to set it to an address that is already attached to another account).

Also, Webmin is Virtualmin. There's just a different theme that makes Webmin look more Virtualmin-y. You may want to check in the Webmin:Webmin Configuration:Webmin Themes page to be sure you're using the Virtualmin Framed Theme.

Hi Joe,
You STILL at it?? Thought you'd be retired by now :-)

Actually, I *DO* seem to have lost access as Vmin.:
---------------------
Unable to connect
Firefox can't establish a connection to the server at netcapitalisation.com:10000.
-----------------------------
Login to Usermin
You must enter a username and password to login to the Usermin server on fablor.net.
---------------------------
I can't get in using any option (IP, domain,10000,20000) there is no switch option to Vmin in the menu when I do go in as Webmin.

The Server is serving ok, just not letting me behind the counter!

(Woops! will change the address on file for account)

Cheers?

Not sure wot u mean here.
But I can't see much relevant in docs and I didn't really change anything drastically - just suddenly no longer able to access at Admin level vis: fablor.net:10000. it just opens as Usermin with no other options to switch.

(Have reset account details and I DO exist now! :-) )

Just sent you access info via email........

Cheers!

---------------------

Have read things and been there but am none the wiser, sorry.
Can't see any options to make use of......... :-{

I can log in as https://netcapitalisation.com:20000/
gets me to a lonely Usermin page. Nothing of any kind there.
Certainly no option to switch to VMIN -
Ask for "System Information" get:
Error - File not found
---------
https://netcapitalisation.com:10000/
gets me:
Unable to connect
Firefox can't establish a connection to the server at netcapitalisation.com:10000.

So I can't get at anything as suggested to check.
Vmin has vanished from view, but mail for example is still working.
FTP is not available, though.

Something has broken very recently - I WAS able to get in and do things (??)but the access was lost suddenly.

Cheers?

Hi Joe,
I HAVE studied the extensive docos - but there is NOTHING relative to this very weird problem of mine.

As I mentioned, I have NO ACCESS now to do anything of use on the system at all.

Mail gets through
FTP is possible
Web pages display

Could it be something to do with login permissions?
I've not changed them as even after all this time the system has not been put on line seriously..... (mainly newbie reasons).

Have had mail fail complaints recently though.

Sounds like the firewall on the server is blocking you.

On the servers default IP you must allow inbound traffic to port 10000 to get access to webmin/virtualmin via a web browser.

Also, you must allow output traffic for port 80 on your servers default IP to enable virtualmin to contact secure.virtualmin.com. This is how virtualmin validates your license key. Some other stuff in virtualmin would also be broken if outbound port 80 wasn't open.

I believe yum update won't even work if outbound port 80 isn't open.

Hi Lorne,
Thanks for your reply in which you said:

-------------------------

Well, I have had access before, only suddenly I do not.
I did not deliberately alter anything on the System and I cannot even see an option under the Webmin login to do anything about it.

Can you point me to where/how this can be done, please?

Cheers,
John

Well, it's a helluva learning curve for this ol' warhorse -
After much research and finding the other thread about losing Vmin in exactly same circumstances (??!!)

I don't have Lynx, but do have elinks and pinfo.

BUT this is the end results of my trying to get in to the System much less follow the instructions to re-enable Vmin access.

> man -k lynx
elinks (1) - lynx-like alternative character mode WWW browser
pinfo (1) - curses based lynx-style info browser
> elinks http://localhost:10000
ELinks: Connection refused
> pinfo http://localhost:10000
Error opening terminal: unknown.
Przemek's Info Viewer v0.6.9
Security warning: Unable to get GID of group called: nogroup
Error: could not open info file, trying manual
> elinks https://localhost:10000
ELinks: Connection refused
> pinfo https://localhost:10000
Error opening terminal: unknown.
Przemek's Info Viewer v0.6.9
Security warning: Unable to get GID of group called: nogroup
Error: could not open info file, trying manual
---------------------------------

Will I have to go get Lynx specifically and install it?
Or is the problem still something else?

TIA

John

Hey John,

lynx is just for testing to see if a firewall is the cause of the problem. links will also work.

But you were saying earlier that you could login to Webmin, which means a firewall is not the problem. (This also means you are logged into Virtualmin, because they are the same thing...Virtualmin is a module within Webmin.)

I believe I saw your login details come in via email, so I'll login and take a look to see if I can figure out what's got you confused.

Hey John,

Webmin wasn't running. No obvious reason for that that I can see.

I've also started a yum update on your system...you've got some rather old versions running there.

Hey John,

<i>When you say (1) Not sure wot u mean here - as I could get in to Webmin and ONLY Webmin?</i>

Webmin is the same thing as Virtualmin. If you were logged into Webmin, you were logged into Virtualmin. But if Webmin is down, you couldn't have possibly logged into either (they are the same things). So, if you couldn't get into Virtualmin, you couldn't get into Webmin--they're the same thing.

Maybe you were able to get into Usermin? (Usermin is the webmail client, among other things, and listens on port 20000).

<i>(2) Thanks for that - but r u referring to Script progs or Webmin or Fedora?</i>

All packages. Everything that is packaged (Fedora and Virtualmin-provided packages) will get updated if you do a &quot;yum update&quot;. You can set this to run automatically by setting the yum update daemon to run in the Webmin Bootup and Shutdown module (it's called yum-updatesd on most systems).

Scripts that have been installed with the Install Scripts feature can be updated within Virtualmin, and we try to keep the updates clean and free of problems--sometimes the script authors make that difficult, requiring numerous upgrade steps, but generally we get it right. You can even perform upgrades in bulk.

For security sake, I would suggest at least a weekly check of your script versions. yum probably ought to be running every couple of days. We've also added a Virtualmin Package Updates module to the product that pops up an extra box on the System Information page, if any hosting related packages have updates available.

********** Will start reading at once on YUM

********** Great! Now that I'm getting serious at last, I'll make it part of my housekeeping routines. I'm already security-fanatical on my PC (FORCED to run Windoze for some of my vital programs.. :-( )

Thanks again, Joe, take 10 bucks outta the till and go have a good time!

Cheers!
