.mhtl format...how does this work?

Hi guys, havent seen this before, but microsoft word is capable of exporting documents as web pages in .mhtl format.

How can this actually be used on web pages?

My attempt at simply copying a webpage of this format into public_html and renaming it index.html for example, ends up with a lot of rubbish...not what i was expecting.
