Sub-domain as Main Site?

I want a sub-domain to be the main site say sub.example.com

Do I first need to create a main virtual server example.com and then a sub-server sub.example.com and forward the main to the sub?

Or as long as the A record is set up, can I just create sub.example.com on the main virtual server without creating a sub-domain on Virtualmin?

What do you recommend or is there a better way?

Solved

As long as the A record is set. You can create the main virtual server sub.example.com without having to set up example.com. Note, if you're not using example.com then forwarding example.com to sub.example.com would help too.
