Unless it is very large or the disk/interface is very slow, that's longer than it needs...so, it probably just timed out. (The Authentic theme can mask this kind of timeout, since it displays a loading indicator.)
I'd guess the filesystem creation completed, and you just didn't get a status about it. Try mounting it up and see if there's any errors.

How large is the drive? mkfs can take a long time for large disks..

Just to verify, you're saying that after it got stuck there, you then attempted to mount it, but it didn't work?
Did you receive a particular error message?

went i try to create the filesystem i got /dev/sdb1 alignment is offset by 3072 bytes. This may result in very poor performance, (re)-partitioning suggested. after that just stay there until i reboot the server 45 min later i try to mount and give me another error

Okay, thanks for the info!
When you tried to mount it later, you mentioned receiving another error? If this error was different, what error did you receive?

Sorry for the delay and thanks for the help. Nop i just got that error and after 45 min i reboot. Can be possible that the drive its usb3 and the server its usb2 and its a big drive? I did mount the same type of drive on our other server with no problem but its a newer server
