We recommend using the software versions your distribution offers by default, and changing that can lead to some issues.
However, if you wish to change to MariaDB, it may be as simple as removing the various MySQL packages you have installed now, and installing the MariaDB packages available in Ubuntu's universe repository.
You can see the list of packages by going to packages.ubuntu.com, and searching for "mariadb".
Note though that we'd highly recommend making a backup of your server before making such a change.
