Debian 8 & PHP 5+7, default PHP Version

I'm replacing my old debian server and as Virtualmin served me well over the last 8 years, my new setup is also managed with Virtualmin.

I decided to go with nginx this time and installed it in the following order:

  • Virtualmin (via with all requirements, which means Apache2 and PHP 5, etc.)
  • nginx
  • PHP7 via packages

In the meanwhile apache was also removed as it is not used anymore.

Regarding to the highest available PHP version should be used by nginx. But every time I create a new virtual server the default is PHP 5 instead.

I can change it within /etc/init.d/ php-fcgi- by replacing the path, but I would like to set a standard for new servers as I need to set up a few more.

How can this be achived?

Thanks in advance!

Best regards Christian
