Hmm, both appear to be hitting the remote server and deliver a message... does the first message perhaps appear in a spam folder?

Both were received. The first just took several HOURS to actually appear in the inbox. Apparently there is a known delay in NTL -> Virigin -> Google emails, although I've never heard of it before.
