pop3 / smtp configuration issues on vps

hi there,

i have recently created a new tld wich i transfered and pointed to my vps using webmin/virtualmin, the emails works just fine online with roundcube that i have installed.

Now i need to provide to this tld the chance of pop3/smtp in order to get the emails with outlook, but its beeing rejected from the server, i checked some posts here in the forum but i havent found any solution yet, it seems my vps doenst allow the connection with the port 25 also the port 143 (wich was the one used before on this tld). - this tld was using pop3 and smtp and mail.tld.net on outlook.

any ideias how can i make this work? i really need this working, thanks in advance

You need to provide more information for us to be able to reproduce this / get an idea what might be wrong. :)

I.e. what is the actual domain name involved, what errors do you get exactly on the client, what gets logged in /var/log/mail.log (or the equivalent for your distro, which distro are you using?).

hi there,

i am using CentOS Linux 6.5 and the domain name is postalfree.net (new costumer) he was using cpanel before and he made several accounts wich he could connect with outlook, now i have changed the ip's in order to point to my vps and he cannot connect his outlook anymore, i left the same password as before.

i am really a newbie on virtualmin and this system, does this help?

I tested the domain "postalfree.net" and I can't see any immediate problems with it. The name and "mail.postalfree.net" resolves to the IP 80.241.212.154, and that IP answers properly on ports 25, 110 and 143.

So your client needs to tell you precisely what the issue is, what errors he gets, what hostnames he uses to connect to your server, what ports he uses, if he uses SSL, and so on. And you'd need to check the logs in /var/log for problems at the time when he tries to access mail. Can't say much more really at this point...

Thank you so much for your reply, if i may ask you how can i check /var/log for problems?

Do you have SSH access to the server? Then you can log on to it and use either the usual shell commands (cd, ls, cat, less and so on) to show the file contents, or install the file manager "Midnight Commander", usually in the package "mc".

Otherwise Webmin has a log viewer module under "System -> System Logs".

Please enclose shell listings in

tags, as to preserve line breaks and monospace font. Otherwise they become unreadable.

You'd need to look at the logs when you know that your client just made a connection attempt, otherwise the lines can very well be from something else. Best is to use the "tail -f" command to constantly watch the log WHILE your client is trying to connect.

But before you go chasing for problems in the log, first have your client give you the exact details I outlined before!

I can't really offer you a crash course in Linux shell operation here. :) That's beyond the scope of giving free help in this forum.

Hi there,

I found the problem and it seems that the username must be like user.domain and not the full email address, so i made a few tests and it worked just fine so i guess this issue was solved, silly stuff indeed...

Even so i must say thank you to Locutus was amazing with the help and everything, indeed i made a good choice using virtualmin/webmin, i am very happy with the system and also with the comunity.

Thanks again!

Yes, you can configure in Virtualmin whether the username format is the full domain name, or just "user.domain" or similar.
