I am trying to figure out how to set up a VPN on my server (CentOS 6) and I am confused about which way to proceed.
Do I go down the route of installing openvpn via yum: $ sudo install openvpn
Or, do I install it as a Webmin module? As in, PPTP VPN Server Webmin module found on this page: http://www.webmin.com/standard.html
What is the difference?
This is just for me, as an exercise for me to learn something new, and maybe even use it when I am away from home or when on public networks, if I get it to work! :-D
For starters, PPTP and OpenVPN are two completely different things. ;) Otherwise, do you have more concrete questions?
I didn't know that they are different. What is the difference?
Which tutorial online (setting a VPN server) would you recommend for a newbie like me?
The difference? Well, it's like the difference between Linux and Windows. ;) It's just two completely different protocols, software, servers etc.
Tutorials, sorry I don't know any; when I need to know something, I usually ask Google. :) I use OpenVPN on Linux, and the embedded GUI in my pfSense firewall.
Windows and Linux are both Operating Systems. So are these 2 just different VPN servers?
It was just a comparison. Asking what the difference between OpenVPN and PPTP is, is like asking what the difference between Windows and Linux (both are OSes), or a car and a bike (both are vehicles) is. They are totally different. Protocol, encryption and authentication methods, server software, client software, parameters, everything is different. Just the result (VPN connection) is the same.
If you have concrete questions about OpenVPN, feel free to ask. Otherwise I'm afraid I can't say much.
Sometimes, when you don't know anything about a subject, even searching online may seem like an impossible task. :-)
But thanks to your efforts here, and from the information you already shared with me, Locutus, I searched for [OpenVPN vs PPTP] and I am beginning to get a clearer picture of how I want to proceed.
Okidoki, in any case good luck with your endeavor! :)
