[Solved] Fresh Install - The ClamAV program clamscan does not appear to be working properly

I created a Droplet over at DigitalOcean.com

512 MB
20 gig SSD disk
1 TB transfer

CentOS 6.4 x64

On the wizard, I chose NO to both Clam and SpamAssassin

When I click SYSTEM INFORMATION, I get this message in Yellow Highlight:

Virtualmin's configuration has not been checked since it was last updated. Click the button below to verify it now.

When I click that button, I get this:

The status of your system is being checked to ensure that all enabled features are available, that the mail server is properly configured, and that quotas are active ..
Your system has 490.68 MB of memory, which is at or above the Virtualmin recommended minimum of 256 MB.
BIND DNS server is installed, and the system is configured to use it.

Mail server Postfix is installed and configured.

Your Postfix version does not support per-domain outgoing IP addresses.

Apache is installed.

The following PHP versions are available : 5.3.3 (/usr/bin/php-cgi)

Webalizer is installed.

Apache is configured to host SSL websites.

MySQL is installed and running.

ProFTPd is installed.

Logrotate is installed.

SpamAssassin and Procmail are installed and configured for use.

The ClamAV program clamscan does not appear to be working properly :

ERROR: Can't write to temporary directory

----------- SCAN SUMMARY -----------
Known viruses: 2751088
Engine version: 0.97.6
Scanned directories: 0
Scanned files: 0
Infected files: 0
Data scanned: 0.00 MB
Data read: 0.00 MB (ratio 0.00:1)
Time: 5.925 sec (0 m 5 s)
. Either change the program on the spam and virus scanners page, or disable this feature.
.. your system is not ready for use by Virtualmin.

What's going on here? What am I missing?

Note: I'm brand new with VirtualMin. Used Cpanel and Zpanel but am looking for something leaner, meaner and more secure and stumbled upon this. ;)

Thanks in advance!

Howdy,

Hmm, I hadn't heard of that issue happening before, except with another customer using that particular provider.

How much RAM does your VPS provide?

You can determine that with this command:

free -m

You can see the details of the other fellow who had that issue here:

http://www.virtualmin.com/node/26836

For him, it ended up being a RAM related issue -- his VPS didn't have enough RAM to be able to run ClamAV. Upgrading to a VPS with more RAM resolved it.

However, you may also be able to allocate additional swap space.

Alternatively, if you don't wish to use ClamAV, you can always disable it altogether (what you set during the install process wasn't disabling ClamAV, but instead configuring it to use the standalone scanner rather than the server-based scanner).

To disable it, go into System Settings -> Features and Plugins, and there you can disable the Virus Scanning feature.

HI Andy,

Thanks for the reply!

I DID see that thread and how he resolved it. There were a few people on there who didn't resolve it like that though so not sure what to think and that's why I posted.

When I ran the free -m command on my provided console, I got this:

And, yes, Newbie that I am, I thought I was turning it OFF so you actually kinda solved my issue....except I can't find System Settings > Features & Plugins. I'm looking in that left hand nav there but it seems like I should be looking elsewhere.... (sorry for the newb question)

Howdy,

Yeah, you're a bit low on RAM there, and it doesn't appear that you've been allocated any swap. So disabling ClamAV may be a good step.

Are you logged into Virtualmin as root?

There should be a System Settings option along the left side, underneath "Services" and above "Email Messages".

Within System Settings is a Features and Plugins option, where you can enable and disable various things. But that would only be available to the Master Admin -- which is typically the root user.

Ah, you appear to be in the Webmin side of things... you'd want to click Virtualmin at the top of that page in order to access the "System Settings" menu.

Ahhh! I thought that was just a logo. Doesn't look like a link. Got it now. :)

Thanks.

PS Based off my config and server resources there, do you think 1 brochure-ware local city/state type site will be OK without upgrading?

Well, there's always a lot of ifs, ands, and buts that depend on your specific circumstances.

That said, I'd like to think your server could handle a single site, even with minimal RAM.

You can always perform some steps to reduce RAM usage, such as disabling unneeded services and removing unused Apache and PHP modules.

If you run into memory issues running that site, my suggestion would be to open up a new forum thread, and in there, describe the issues you're seeing, and what steps you've taken so far to reduce memory usage... as well as the output of the command "free -m".

The solution was pretty clear from both threads: add swap!!

here it is:
