Scenario: I have 2 separate servers, both have virtualmin installed, but only my first server has the nameservers setup.
I have a website on the first server that has been there for a long time, and that website dns is controlled by the nameserver on that physical server.
I am moving the website to the second (new) physical server.
Just for now, I want to go into my ns.my-nameserver.com and ns2.nameserver.com and change the ip address of the website that I am moving.
That way I can do some work on the new site, like installing the cms etc, and then when I am done for the night, I simply change the ip address back to the old one so the site works.
*I can only do this because I go through godaddy and they seem to be VERY FAST at changing the ip addresses, sometimes only minutes.
How do I do this? *change the ip address for a website on my nameserver so it resolves over to the new physical server?
Hi,
If you're goal is to work on the new site, while serving your old site until the new site is finished, a better suggestion would be on the local machine where you are doing development, update the "hosts" file and point the domain to the new server. This way, only "you" would see the new site, and others would still see the old site until it's time to make the change permanently. We do this all the time when developing sites, therefore making the transition seamless when the time comes.
Here's how to do this:
Open in
Notepad
the fileC:\Windows\System32\drivers\etc\hosts
Add at the bottom of the file the following line:
10.0.0.1 mydomain.com
*** where "10.0.0.1" represents the new server's IP address, and "mydomain.com" is the domain you want to work on locally ***
If this solution does not work for you, or you are not developing from a Windows machine, let us know.
