Physical Location of emails

Hi, My ubuntu 8.04 machine crashed and file system is corrupted, i cant boot it, so i'm booting with ubuntu live cd trying to manually backup the /etc/webmin folder ( i believe it contains all the settings) but i cant find the folder which contains the actual emails of the users. Can someone please guide me as to where the folder is?

Howdy,

Email is located within the home directory for each user, in the Maildir folder.

The Virtual Server owner's email would be in /home/VIRTUAL_SERVER_OWNER/Maildir.

The email for any other user would be in /home/VIRTUAL_SERVER_OWNER/homes/USERNAME/Maildir.

if i do backup and restore on another machine would the mailbox including all the emails be restored too?

Yup, if you use Virtualmin's Backup and Restore to generate a set of backup files -- if you restore them on another machine, email would be included in that.

thats good to hear, but the size of the backup file generated by virtualmin is about 2gb, where the size of folder containing all the email mailboxes is over 3gb.

Well, the email is just text, and the backup files are all compressed... so it wouldn't surprise me if the backup file and email folders didn't have matching sizes.
