Howdy,

If you're interested in using SPF, that's as simple as going into System Settings -> Server Templates -> Default -> BIND DNS Domain, and setting "Add SPF DNS record" to "Yes". It may be that way by default now, I don't recall.

That will enable SPF for any new Virtual Server.

If you have an existing Virtual Server, you can enable it by going into Server Configuration -> DNS Options, and enable SPF records there.

As far as checking email with your iPad -- can you describe what you're trying exactly, and what errors you get when you try it?

If you look in your mail logs (either /var/log/maillog or /var/log/mail.log), do you see any errors listed there?

Thanks for the reply bro! so under the dns options yes SPF records are enabled. the error i get on my ipad is this...

(cannot send mail : a copy has been placed in your outbox. the recipient "jeremiewebber@hotmail.com" was rejeced by the server because it does not allow relaying)

i'm sending an email from info@jerahco.com to jeremiewebber@hotmail.com

i can recieve email to my ipad but it won't send...

Howdy,

That particular error usually occurs whenever your client isn't setup to authenticate when sending an outgoing email. Many clients don't do that by default, there's a setting you'd need to enable to ensure it's passing in a username and password whenever sending an email.

Howdy,

That's not a Virtualmin setting, that's a setting in the email client on your iPad.

Chances are you old account was with an ISP. An ISP can determine whether you're a legitimate user or not simply based on your IP address, since they gave you that IP.

For that reason, when dealing with an ISP, you frequently don't need to authenticate outgoing emails.

With Virtualmin, it doesn't have that luxury -- anyone on the Internet could potentially be a legitimate customer. Or, they could be a spammer trying to abuse the server.

So, every client has to authenticate their outgoing emails.

However, as I mentioned above, you may also want to review your mail logs to make sure there aren't any errors.

To summarize what you should to get this working --

  1. First go into your email client, and make absolute certain that it's setup to authenticate outgoing email. The error you're getting suggests it may not be.

  2. Once you do that, if you're still getting the same error message, then review the email logs to see what, if any, errors are showing up in there.

Email logs can be found in either /var/log/maillog, or /var/log/mail.log, depending on your distro.

I'm glad you figured it out!

For future reference, the mail logs can be accessed from within Virtualmin by going into Webmin -> System -> System logs, and you can click "View" next to your mail log.
