Webmin or Virtualmin?

Hi,

This is a bit custom question but i hope you can help me. As a newbie linux user, I am preparing to switch from a managed vps to an unmanaged dedicated server. Probably i will buy this one: http://www.server4you.com/root-server/server-details.php?products=3 Intel® Xeon® X3440, 16 GB DDR3 ECC, 2x 1500GB SATA II, 5,400 rpm, 8 MB RAID 1 by software

Planning to install centos5 64bit. Will it be best choise?

I will be the only person reach a website panel. My customers will be on my wordpress multisite with domain mapping: http://wordpress.org/extend/plugins/wordpress-mu-domain-mapping/ There will "never" be another person that will reach server. But there will be lots of domain alias. So should i use webmin or virtualmin? What type of special features i cant get if i choose only webmin over virtualmin? Should i start with virtualmin even i will be the only person to manage it?

(PS: Maybe in future, i will need to set a 2nd server as mysql server)

Choosing a Linux distribution is a subjective question, but CentOS 5 64 bit will work just fine :-)

So should i use webmin or virtualmin?

I recommend.... both! :-)

Virtualmin is a Webmin module -- it runs on top of Webmin.

So if you're using Virtualmin, you also have access to Webmin.

Virtualmin comes with the advantage that all you have to do is run the install.sh script, and it'll configure your server for you... Apache, Postfix, BIND, and so forth. It also makes it easy for you to add new domains, accounts, and the like. While you can also do that from within Webmin, it's not as simple.

What I'd recommend is using the Download link above, downloading the install.sh script, and performing your installation using that.

Better then opening lots of new topics, let me ask my questions in this topic :P

Create alias websites by

Creating Redirect virtual host Creating permanent Redirect virtual host Creating ProxyPass virtual host Adding ServerAlias to parent

Now.. this option.. i couldnt decide whats best. So i will use wordpress multisite with domain mapping: http://wordpress.org/extend/plugins/wordpress-mu-domain-mapping/

Tons of alias domain will be on main domain. And i will give gmail accounts to these domains. "Adding ServerAlias to parent" is default one but i dont think it will be best for me when i have 1000 domain alias on a main domain i think. Those domains will serve completely different websites. Just "same php files" but different databases, different configs so different content. So which option are u suggesting?

Actually, opening new topics really helps; it keeps us from getting confused, and it helps other folks when they're searching for solutions in the future :-)

But, I'll answer what you have there --

Create alias websites by

I prefer "Adding ServerAlias to parent", it's nice and simple, and works fine with WordPress (or WPMU).

Just "same php files" but different databases, different configs so different content. So which option are u suggesting?

Well, is there a particular reason this would make "Adding ServerAlias to parent" not viable? You of course always have the option of creating individual Virtual Servers for all your domains if you want to separate each of the domains more.

But, if your goal is to have a large WPMU setup, using ServerAliases is a common way to do that.

All that said -- while I'm not super-familiar with WPMU, I was under the impression that it used one database for all of the users it manages.
