Mail doesn't work: User unknown in virtual alias table

Hi, I've got a more or less fresh install, but mail doesn't seem to work:

    SMTP error from remote mail server after RCPT TO:<lex@gran-canaria-info.com>:
    host mail.gran-canaria-info.com [88.208.193.145]:
    550 5.1.1 <lex@gran-canaria-info.com>: Recipient address rejected:
    User unknown in virtual alias table

When I want to save "Edit FTP Server", I get the following error message:

    Failed to save mailbox : Invalid PID file

I found this thread: http://www.virtualmin.com/node/7746

and hostname -f resolves fine.

What should be my next step trying to fix this?

We need more info about this to venture a guess...

Is "lex" a vserver owner or an address in the respective domain? What else can you tell about your setup there? Can you re-check what you mean with "Edit FTP Server"? Do you mean "Edit Mail and FTP Users"?

Is the Mail feature active for the domain? Is the primary email address enabled for that user? Is the address listed in Webmin's Postfix module under "Virtual Domains"?

HI Locutus,

Thanks for your fast reply! I'll try to answer all your questions:

lex is an address on the domain. If I click Edit Mail and FTP Users, it's the second 'user' listed. Login Acess there says only "FTP" (didn't see that before). If I now click 'lex' to go to "Edit FTP User", at Login Permissions it says: "Email and FTP". (A bit strange, no?) If I click save here, all fine, but Login Access on the results page is still only FTP.

If I click again on 'lex', and click the button on the bottom of the next screen that says "Login to Usermin", then that doesn't happen. I'm sent to: https://88.208.193.145:20000/, so my guess is that that must be an IP table thing, as I had to 'do something' to see virtualmin too.

So I did this: iptables -I INPUT -m state --state NEW -m tcp -p tcp --dport 20000 -j ACCEPT

and yes, now usermin shows up.

However, in the top left corner it states this as user: lex thoonen lex.gran-canaria-info@penghosting.nl

in stead of: lex@gran-canaria-info.com

penghosting.nl is the server name (if I say that correctly).

Back to your questions:

mail feature is active for gran-canaria-info.com

primary email address? I've been looking but I'm not sure what you mean here.

Virtual domains in postfix:

lex isn't listed it seems, the only ones with this domain are:

gran-canaria-info@gran-canaria-info.com gran-canaria-info
gran-canaria-info.com   gran-canaria-info.com
abuse@gran-canaria-info.com [my normal e-mail address]
hostmaster@gran-canaria-info.com    [my normal e-mail address]
postmaster@gran-canaria-info.com    [my normal e-mail address]
webmaster@gran-canaria-info.com [my normal e-mail address]
admin@gran-canaria-info.com admin-gran-canaria-info.com

[my normal e-mail address] does in fact show my normal e-mail address...

hmm, i got an big error after saving the message. So I hit back in my browser and tried to save again. Now it's here twice...
