Virtualmin doesn't actually have SpamAssassin in it's repository, it uses the version available for your distribution.
If your distribution isn't offering a newer SpamAssassin, you could always perform the upgrade by pulling SpamAssassin in from another source. Chances are it would work just fine with Virtualmin.
The only thing I'd suggest watching out for is that I'd recommend knowing and trusting the repository you're pulling it in from. If you can try it out on a test server first, I'd highly recommend it!
Before doing all that though, you may want to try pulling in the latest SpamAssassin rules. You can do that by running "sa-update" as root.
Hi,
I've looked at I think most of the topics discussing spamassassin and version 3.3.1. May I add my voice to this please - could version 3.3.1 be tested by you guys re compatibility with virtualmin? It's been out several months now and spam is becoming a very big problem - I'm going to look into running a test on virtualmin 3.2.5 on a test server but I think it would be of great benefit to load it onto your repos if possible.
I'm on centos now and it looks like I'll have to get it from one of the repos that are frowned upon (I think epl or some such)
v 3.3.1 has some significant updates in it's rules processor that aren't included as part of it's update mechanism - unless I've read it wrong though there's quite a list of changes - at least 4 page scrolls extra from v3.2.5
It's a lot of work testing and maintaining software packages, and we generally go out of our way not to redistribute packages that are already provided by the distribution vendors.
You could plead your case to your distribution vendor that the SpamAssassin rules you require don't work in the version they're shipping :-)
Alternatively... while I don't suggest broadly enabling a new repository, you could certainly download just one package, such as SpamAssassin.
Version 3.3.1 should work just fine, as that's what's included in Ubuntu 10.04, which is a supported distribution.
ok great - hadn't realised it was in ubuntu as it's not in debian or centos..
Good stuff then I'll try it on test machine prior (have to figure out making selective packages without it getting everything yet !!._) though if it's working in ubuntu then shouldn't be any issues with virtualmin.
Cheers.
I would like to know this too. It seems the last few weeks I have seen an increase in the amount of SPAM getting through.
