Help! I get the Apache Default Test Page instead of my Site Home Page

This is my first attempt at setting up a site on a server I manage myself! I'm trying to set up a site subdomain.domain.com where domain.com is on a different server.

I've installed webmin v1.480 and virtualmin v3.703. The operating system is Cent OS Linux v5.

I can access my site using ftp and ssh. I have configured my ftp client and the "root" access for my client seems to be the folder /home/paulk. This matches the server configuration details in virtualmin.

Using my ftp-client, I uploaded an index.html file into the public_html folder for the site. However, typing http://subdomain.domain.com into the browser simply ends up with the default Apache 2 Test Page. I've tried clearing caches, reloading pages etc.

If I go into Webmin and look a the servers within the Apache webserver, the VS for my subdomain is listed with the document root as /home/paulk/public_html which is what I would expect. However, trying to access the site from there returns the default apache page too.

Apache records the following entry in the error log: [Sat Apr 24 05:31:26 2010] [error] [client 86.181.237.37] Directory index forbidden by Options directive: /var/www/html/

Any pointers to help resolve this problem would be gratefully received.

Thanx.

Hmm... what process did you use to install Virtualmin? Typically, we recommend the install.sh script, which handles installing the most recent Virtualmin version, as well as configuring your entire system so that it'll work out of the box.

I ask because the Virtualmin version you're using is from last year, and wouldn't typically be installed by the installer.

I don't know if that's related to the issue you're seeing or not though...

But even if not, you're likely to run into other issues if you configure everything manually.

So, if it's possible, and you're dealing with a new server with nothing live on it, I'd highly recommend starting out using the install.sh script in the "Download" link above, and then we can work from there knowing you have a correctly configured system.

I installed last year. I'm sure I used the install package and thought I had a working site. However, I think I must have given up and hosted it elsewhere as I was under time constraints.

I've had the server re-imaged. I installed using the script and Virtualmin is now v1.500 and Webmin 3.77.gpl

I followed my notes from the previous install and ended up worse off. I could ftp (once I'd manually set the IP address in system settings), but the browser hung when I tried to access the site: [notice] child pid 19805 exit signal Segmentation fault (11)

I rebooted the apache server as a last-gasp attempt and I can now see the site - so not really sure what the issue was.

Thanks for your help. Appreciated.
