Tuning up a Web Server

Hi, i have been working with Virtualmin for some time, testing and learning how to do everything. Now let me state that i'm a newbie when it comes to server and of course virtualmin and i know that my question might sound i little vague. But i would like to know how and what things should i do to configure a completely safe, secure, stable and efficient web server to host pages? I don't want to have any mail, dns or other service apart from apache, php, mysql and postgresql. What things should i check before making my webserver available for the internet? Please don't think i'm being lazy about asking this, but i have read a lot about this but i really want to read from you people who are the gurus with this software. Thanks for any answer, link, article, etc. i may get.

Howdy,

Well, your question is a bit on the "broad" side :-)

Generically, I'd suggest going through, and disabling any service you aren't going to be using.

I'd also make sure the software on your system is fully up to date. Not only on system updates, but also all the web applications running on your server should be at their latest versions.

Outside of that, there's lots of ideas... there's lots of large books written on the specifics of securing servers... and I'll let some other folks chime in with specific tidbits they use on their servers :-)

Good luck!
