Cant connect via smtp with IMAP client

I have a virtualmin install in Ubuntu 8.04, I had problems with digital certs for a while but now have that fixed. My only problem is that I cant send emails via imap clients (thunderbird & kmail) it fails to authenticate. I can use usermin with no problems at all. I don't have any firewall installed & SMTP form the net works fine. Is there anything I should be looking for? I have looked in the /var/logs for any clues but so far no good. Any help would be appreciated.

I'd take a peek in both /var/log/mail.log and /var/log/auth.log.

See if any errors show up in the logs if you restart both Postfix and Saslauthd.

After that, see what shows up upon connecting to each of them.

Lastly, what port are you using to connect to with Thunderbird/kmail... are you using the default 25?
