Hi, questions about adding virtual interface, and subdomain usage...

Hi everyone, I got few newbie issues and hope to get some help here.

My box has two NICs, that eth1 is for my public IPs, and I needed to assign multiple IPs to eth1. I did a Google search and found some very brief guides on doing that via Webmin.

After some trying I seem to have gotten my virtual interfaces working, but I want to confirm that I really did set them up correctly, since I did encounter some issues while doing the setup.

At first I tried to add my virtual interfaces via:

Webmin CP --> Networking --> Network Configuration --> Network Interfaces --> Active Now --> eth1

and got two issues:

For {Netmask, MTU, Broadcast}, when I picked "automatically assigned" I got different values than the parent NIC, and those values didn't work. For example:

Parents netmask =
Auto assigned =

So for all the virtual interfaces, I just use the same values as the parent's, is that correct?

Also, when adding virtual interfaces as in the above, while I for sure did save the changes, yet those virtual interfaces just keep disappearing.

I then added them under the "Activated at Boot" and now them present under both "Active Now" and "Activated at Boot," and they are working fine.

Why would those added virtual interfaces disappear? Is that "Active Now" is temporary for the current session only?

Last, a very newbie question that I hope people don't mind.

For making a URL like:

to this:

If manually, I make a "/etc/httpd/conf.d/virtual.conf" file, but via Webmin, how should I do it?

Thanks in advance!!

Sounds like you're on the right track!

It's hard to say why your interfaces are disappearing though, that's not something that should normally occur if you aren't rebooting. In theory, if you don't touch the server, neither should Webmin -- and all your interfaces would stay alive unless told to do otherwise :-)

Can you think of anything going on now that might be bringing them offline?

As far as setting up your URL goes -- yeah, you just need a new VirtualHost it sounds like.

I believe you can do that using Webmin -> Servers -> Apache -> New Virtual Host.

All that said -- are you by chance using Virtualmin? Virtualmin is a module that sits on top of Webmin, that make setting up domains, web sites, email, and so forth pretty easy. It's designed for multi-user servers, but is still nice even for one admin.

Have a good one!

Thanks for your kind reply.

Regarding the issue that my virtual interfaces weren't being saved, instead of adding them under "Active Now," adding them under "Activated at Boot" works for me.

As for subdomain, yes, I am using Virtualmin. I actually should have posted this question on the Virtualmin forum instead. :D

Anyway, I have tried different approachs and I just couldn't get this simple setup to work...

I have tried:
- Virtualmin CP --> (My main domain) --> Create Sub-Server --> (Using name: Subdomain.MyDomain.com)

// didn't work, then,

- Modified my CNAME via GoDaddy.com, added the above subdomain name, didn't work either.

// then, I read from some post on this forum, to do,

- Virtualmin CP --> Server Templates --> Default Settings For Sub-Servers --> Add sub-domain DNS records to parent domain? (From default, to yes)

// didn't work either.

I don't have any other idea now...

When you say "it doesn't work" -- what are you attempting to do exactly... what is the goal? And what's not working about it?

Its been along time I am train to resolve the issue but no success so far. Basically the story is the same as Farnsworth stated from the begging. What I am train to save is virtual interface so when I reboot the system to keep the existing interface. what happens is when I reboot the system the Virtual interface settings are gone , so I have to recreate until next reboot, I am attaching the files hoping someone can help me Thanks in advanced
