Hello
Have some licensing questions, currently in a test environment.
I own a 10 instance CloudMin license and a 10 domain VirtualMinPro License hosted on the Rackspace Cloud. They are running on two separate dedicated servers and CloudMin is managing the (mini) "cluster" successfully.
I want to upgrade this license but want to make sure I stay legal here as I push for going live with a fairly mission critical application.
To ensure availability my plan is to implement complete replication and load balancing in a separate datacenter with redundant geography and IP space.
I want to utilize the replication features in CloudMin replicate the current VirtualMin system utilizing an EC2 instance for redundancy.
Do I need two seperate VirtualMin licenses to do this? If I am using replication, won't the license file also get replicated?
Thanks Pete
Hey Pete,
They're pretty good about how licensing works when dealing with a backup system, or hot spare... what I don't recall at the moment is where a second active box fits into the mix :-)
I'll shoot Joe an email, and let you know...
Thanks!

So, yeah, a hot spare is totally legit on the same license. And technically, it's pretty hard to differentiate between a hot spare and a load balanced replica.
From a purely business perspective, I think it's fair to expect payment for all servers that are actively serving clients. So, a second license is needed in this case.
That said, we're planning cloud pricing for Virtualmin, which would lower the cost of having multiple instances running. We need to write a bit more code to make this happen; but we'll be giving free license extensions to folks who have been running on VPS and cloud systems when the new pricing becomes available, so don't consider this a suggestion to hold off on plans. The cloud/VPS pricing will be available to resellers in a week or two, and hopefully in the shop by the first of the new year.
