proftp problems

Looking for some advice about proftp.

I have two servers curently setup with ubuntu 8.04 and I'm attempting to setup a game server. The first server is setup with virtualmin, and the second has webmin. The first server is the main which also hosts websites and the game script (SWIFT PANEL). My goal is to hook several servers up to the main one which will be used to host clients. I can only put about 6 or 7 clients per box and each box needs ftp in order for each client to get to their files. The problem I'm having is that each time I install proftp on the second box I get conflics. I will need to setup proftp for each server I setup, and if I'm already having a problem setting up a second ftp, well I must be doing something wrong.

I've heard that you can only have one ftp running per ip, but then again I've read other things as well which don't work. So I'm stuck and really need some help on this.

in the game client there is a webftp program which I am using, but if proftp isn't installed on the second server it dosen't work.

right now I have proftp installed on both servers, but I end up getting strange results from time to time, like one ftp will stop working. I have to shutdown the other proftp and then reboot inorder to get them both working again. I get the feeling that its conflicting with the other ftp program.

I was just wondering if anyone else has been able to get proftp to work on multiable servers, and if I could get some help on how to do this. Thanks.

I guess I'm a bit confused as to what you're doing on the second box there... you should only ever have to install ProFTP once per box.

If there's an existing FTP server running on it, you'd have issues with conflicts.

So, make sure there's no other FTP server running -- and if not, you in theory shouldn't have any issues setting up ProFTP :-)

If you do, let us know what exactly you're trying to do and what error messages you're getting.

Ok, let me try to explain this again because my first post was a bit confusing. I agree. First off I guess that I’ll just ask is if you can have as many proftp running as you want as long as there is only one per server? I think you answered that for me already. Second off what I can’t do is login to the second proftp on the second server with a external ftp client. My error logs say that the user doesn’t exist, but proftp is looking for this user on the first server and not the second server.

I already changed the second server proftp port to 22. I have ssh set to a different port. And port 22 is open on the router.

I think you're confusing terms a bit, as I'm still confused. (Mainly by why you would ever want to run more than one ProFTPd instance. One FTP server is quite enough trouble in my book.) ;-)

But, it sounds like the problem is that your second instance is not configured to authenticate via PAM, which would be required for it to have the same users as the first. I can't really offer much advice on how to do that, since I always just use whatever the package on the OS sets up, and never look at it very closely.

I must have this all messed up. Guess I'll just start from the beginning. Is there any doc on how to setup proftp for multiable servers.

I have two servers and both have a seperate proftp installed. What I would like to do is have one proftp installed on the main server which can connect to both the main server and the second one, and a third and so forth. Guess I'm confused about getting this setup on more then one server. I really don't know how to go about it?
