I have just installed Virtualmin 3.72 gpl on Debian 5 (Lenny), and everything is working fine, except that Bind keeps turning its self off in 3 to 6 hour intervals. Is there anyway to prevent this from happening?
I am a really newbie to Linux, so if this is a silly question, my apologies in advance!
Thanks, Taroon
Me too. I had the same problem and worried. But what you need bind for? I think you only need it if you run any DNS service. If not (like me) keep it switched off.
If you need it, install Monit, that brings back stalling applications.
Hi Flameproof, Many thanks for the reply - we are using Bind to host our nameservers. I will have a look at Monit, not really familiar with it. Thanks for pointing me in the right direction! Taroon

Howdy,
I do indeed like Monit, it's a great tool.
However, in your case, that doesn't necessarily solve that problem.
If BIND is stopping, it shouldn't do that! ;-)
The logfiles may help here -- if you know roughly what time BIND goes down, you may want to look in the logs around that time to see if there are any errors, warnings, or unusual messages.
On Debian, I'd start by looking in /var/log/syslog (which you can do by logging in over SSH, and then using a tool such as "less" -- where you could run "less /var/log/syslog").

Eric, Flameproof, My service provider suggested I disable the Caching Name Server in BIND, and this appears to have worked, at least the system hasn't switched its self off for the past 7.5 hrs which is a good sign! Many thanks for your assistance! Taroon
