Is Virtualmin considered a VPS?

Hello,

Looking to get some clarifications about Webmin/Virtualmin to better understand the differences so that we can better advertise it to potential web hosting clients.

What is the best way to describe what Virtualmin is to a web hosting customer?

What is being created exactly when 'Create a Virtual Server' happens? What is the Definition of a 'Virtual Server' here?

To me it seems that each 'Virtual Server' = Shared Hosting Space, - would that be a fair assessment?

Thanks in advance for any replies!

Howdy,

Virtualmin is a web hosting control panel, and when you create domains with it, those are domains on a shared hosting server.

The term "Virtual Server" is a term we were using here for quite some time -- since before it became popular to mean Virtual Machine,.. and now it's become confusing :-)

Note that it looks like your post here is in the Forums, but also marked as private. That means only the Virtualmin staff can see them, but we don't get any notifications about them or any updates. My recommendation would be to either create public posts in the Forums (where all the Virtualmin community will see it), or private posts using the support tracker (where we'll receive notifications about it).

Also, as I re-read my post, I realize I may not have fully answered your question.

The term "Virtual Server" is synonymous with "domain".

When you create a Virtual Server, you're simply adding a new domain to your server.

Roughly once a year, we consider changing the term Virtual Server into "domain", but it's been that way so long that's turned into a fairly big decision that we've been dragging our feet on.

Very short answer to a long question: Is Virtualmin considered a VPS? NO.

Yes, please change the wording to "domain"... so many more people will start using Virtualmin if you do! : ) (i.e. because of less confusion when they try)

domain might be a little confusing as well (with future thought in mind). How does one differentiate between domains, subdomains, and addon domains for a single user account if its called a "domain"?

Am i right in saying the following are terms all used for these things... apache = vhosts

virtualmin = virtual servers

vestacp = web

cpanel = domains

ispconfig = sites

Centos Web Panel = Accounts (CWP has domains too, but that is not what it seems...its for addon domains as a subdirectory under public_html/ apparently which is even more confusing because am i right in saying that in virtualmin addon domains are outside primary domain public_html?)

perhaps one should go really outrageous and call them "headaches" ^_^

AJECreative is the home of $5 webhosting, $15/month VPS servers (1cpu,1gb RAM, 25GB storage)
