usually on my wordpress sites for my clients once i chagne the internal settings to https://url.domain then things get redirected to https without incident. Now if somebody goes to http://site.tld they no longer get redirected to https://site.tld....

Have you tried setting up a redirect in Virtualmin just for http:// URLs, on the Aliases and Redirects page?

Virtualmin by default doesn't redirect HTTP to HTTPS. Wordpress might do this itself, but I'm not sure.
Alternately, you can explicitly set it up in Virtualmin as I suggested.
