Virtualmin pro new installation assistance

Currently I have a CentOS 6 server running Virtualmin GPL, I would like to migrate it to a new CentOS 7 server running Virtualmin Pro (50 domains should be enough)

  1. Please advise what I need to purchase to make all this happen
  2. I have CentOS 7 core installed on a new server right now (using all defaults) and would like to turn over to you guys to configure partitions (LVM) and install a fresh copy of virtualmin pro.

The server config is

1 X 100GB (SSD) – OS installed there

2 X 1TB (SATA) drives – like to make these a RAID 1 array and have the /home and /var lvm’s on there

Howdy -- thank for contacting us!

We can perform the initial Virtualmin installation for you for $50, if you like. We can install Virtualmin GPL or Virtualmin Pro, it's your choice. What we would do for that, is download and run the install.sh script, and then go through the post-install configuration wizard.

We're not really able to do your drive and partition setup as part of that though. However, we'd be happy to offer some input on how to go about it.

For example, there's documentation here on setting up partitions on drives:

http://doxfer.webmin.com/Webmin/Partitions_on_Local_Disks

And this documentation here is for setting up RAID devices:

http://doxfer.webmin.com/Webmin/Linux_RAID

If you're interested in putting both /home and /var on there, you might need to setup two different partitions, one for each.

What do you think, will that do what you're after?

Thank you for this, I have been using Virtualmin GPL without any issues for a couple of years but would like to support you guys by purchasing the Pro version.

In regards to install, I have done myself before without issue as your install script is excellent. My real need was to have your expertise on the partitions as I am unsure how to mount (or maybe even extend to there?) the /var and /home partitions on the raid drives (I have already setup the raid) so that when virtualmin is installed it uses those partitions and not the paths on the / drive. I understand this may be beyond the install scope but would like a quote to do that as well as the install.

To be clear the software raid is setup and synch is complete, just need the partitions and mount points set correctly.

Thanks for your interest in putting us to use!

Alas, I've asked around, and none of us feel comfortable trying to set that all up.

We haven't done enough work with LVM and RAID to be comfortable setting that up on your server.

We charge $125/hour for custom work, and we'd end up spending quite a bit of that time just trying to research the command syntax and proper setup strategies.

I have a suggestion to simplofy the setup though.

What you could do to keep things simple is to just make one single partition out of your new RAID device, and mount that on /home. We can help walk you through that. And then leave /var on your existing drive, as that doesn't generally get too large.

Plus, as MySQL is disk intensive -- keeping /var on the SSD device would really keep that performing well.

Or, if you really want to see /var on your new drive, you shouldn't have a problem mv'ing /var onto /home/var, and then making a symlink from /var to /home/var.

Would either of those do what you're after? As that would keep things nice and simple.

I appreciate very much your honesty. I have been working on this myself with the help of the data center support and think I have it taken care of. I will get back to you once the server is all configured correctly as it would be a waste not utilizing the raid array. Best to close this and I will open a new ticket when I am ready for the install

Okay, sounds good!

Do let us know how else we can help.

We're happy to be of assistance, we just don't like charging for things we're not particularly good at :-)

Totally appreciate that and offer the same to my customers. I did figure it out and have it all running happily with a mounted /home and /var lv on the raid array.
