Unable to access theme settings on OS X

I tried to change the settings on the authentic theme. The link the button opens is http://localhost:10000/webmin/edit_themes.cgi When I look at the default admin user that Webmin creates on OS X, it has all privileges selected. I disabled all then reenabled all and still nothing. Any idea what causes the Access denied : User admin is not allowed to use the module on Mac OS X when trying to modify settings on the Authentic theme? Jamie thought this could be related to the theme. I get these errors in the console.

I have never encountered that.

if you get this message, then I would expect, this message to be produced by Webmin core and not the theme. The theme injects its data to the module/page that you don't have access to. Go to the Webmin Users and check if your user (admin) can access Webmin Configuration module?

Is there a page in the theme that links to or accesses the Webmin Configuration module though?

Jamie, as it's known, theme settings are injected under Webmin->Webmin Configuration->Themes and thus require `webmin` module enabled.

Just for fun I changed the theme back to the framed theme and back again, same error. What do you all make of that nasty log file?

The most confusing line in the log is Error: Access denied : User root is not allowed to use the module - because it is missing the name of the module that was denied!

The theme settings link on the left menu in the Authentic theme should just link to /webmin/edit_themes.cgi , which you can also access by going to Webmin -> Webmin Configuration -> Webmin Themes. If you go to that page, do you get the same error?

No I don't get the same error. I am able to hit that page to change the themes. It's only when trying to edit the theme settings. I just borked my install though. I deleted the authentic theme and then downloaded the latest from github. I installed it and when activating received this:

Error - Perl execution failed

The folder for the theme should not contain-master.

Actually in normal case scenario you should get the warning and explanation about renaming the theme's directory.

You should've installed the theme from the .build directory from GitHub.

I just downloaded the zip archive on github and then uploaded the zip file through the webmin page. That is how the instructions said to do it on the github page. No matter now. I just downloaded a clean version of webmin to reinstall. Tried to change the theme settings and get the same error. .

You should get .gz not .zip. On the log I saw the directory with -master, I mentioned above.

Yeah, perhaps it's misleading. I went here: https://github.com/qooob/authentic-theme and there is a button that says "Download ZIP" but I guess now it's just a matter of figuring out what's up with that module error. I'd like to be able to make changes and set it to auto update.

Jamie asked about going to the edit themes page. Funny thing is I can go to that page to change a theme but the first tab "Current Theme" is missing like I get on the CentOS servers. The CentOS server has a spinner on that tab as it loads. On MacOS X it does not give the spinner or the tab. It just throws the error.

So, um, bump! Anyone have any idea on this? Jamie, I can re-enable ssh for you if you're ready.

Ilia, on the edit themes page, the tab with the spinner doesn't even come up for settings. What causes that?

Submitted by Ilia on Thu, 03/17/2016 - 00:40

Steffan,

Authentic Theme shouldn't be located at authentic-theme-master folder as seen in your logs but in authentic-theme.

Try deleting cloned version first and re-install it using provided link.

Steffan's picture

I'm already past that point. I told you I deleted all of it and reinstalled on 3/14. I used the version that is installed with the latest Webmin. So, back to what I was saying. What would cause the tab with theme settings not to come up on http://localhost:10000/webmin/edit_themes.cgi?

Ilia's picture
Submitted by Ilia on Thu, 03/17/2016 - 00:48

Alright, sorry I probably missed it.

Do you see left menu when trying to go to theme's settings (edit theme page) or you open it in new window?

What browser are you using? Did you try other browser?

Steffan's picture
Submitted by Steffan on Thu, 03/17/2016 - 01:10 Pro Licensee

I'm using Chrome but tried Firefox too. There is nothing in the left menu either on a Linux server or on my Mac laptop through Webmin. It's when I go to Webmin > Webmin Configuration > Webmin Themes. I should see a "Current Theme" tab but it doesn't load up. I do get the other tabs. When I click on the cogs in the left tool bar at the bottom, I get that error. It links to http://localhost:10000/webmin/edit_themes.cgi

Ilia's picture
Submitted by Ilia on Thu, 03/17/2016 - 02:09

Steffan,

Theme is not meant to work without left menu. I could probably make it work but I see no reason in doing it. Why in the World do you prefer to access http://localhost:10000/webmin/edit_themes.cgi directly?

Can you type in URL http://localhost:10000, then when the whole theme (with left menu, see YouTube Presentation) load, start typing authentic in the left search bar and you will get configuration link. Click on it and you will get all that you need. I have MacBook with latest iOS, all is working fine on local machine?

I think we're misunderstanding each other. I use the left menu pane. I thought you meant there was a link in the Webmin menu to go directly to settings. No, I use that button you put on the details page or the cog wheels in the lower left. I only provided the URL so you know what pages I am on where the error occurs. I'll make a screencast and attach it so you can see the problem.

Ilia's picture
Submitted by Ilia on Thu, 03/17/2016 - 13:02

Wow! That's interesting! I think I know why this is happening. I also have Mac and will be able to fix it on the next release. VideoScreencast almost always 100% more informative! :)

Question to Jamie: Why on MacOS Webmin module's dir is called Webmin and not webmin as standard??

Ilia's picture
Submitted by Ilia on Thu, 03/17/2016 - 13:04

@Steffan Please go to theme's dir/unauthenticated/js, find authentic.js.min and:

Find:

/webmin/edit_themes.cgi

Replace:

/Webmin/edit_themes.cgi

Save the file and hard reload the browser.

Does it work now on your Mac? ;)

Ok, this is a partial fix. The cogs still cause the same error however going through Webmin > Webmin Configuration > Webmin themes, the "Current Theme" tab shows up now. I'm surprised it's a case issue since OS X is a case INsensitive OS. Perhaps the miniserv.pl is.

Ilia's picture
Submitted by Ilia on Thu, 03/17/2016 - 14:49

The theme's code is case sensitive. :)

Jamie, do we have two different W(w)ebmin modules?

Steffan's picture
Submitted by Steffan on Thu, 03/17/2016 - 22:06 Pro Licensee

I've seen that before. You have to explicitly select that FS for case sensitivity and format your drive accordingly before installing the OS. I can honestly say I don't know anyone who has done that on a Mac. I'm surprised that there is something with a capital in a file name!

Ok, the problem here is that in the standard Webmin package, there are directories named both webmin (for the Webmin Configuration module), and Webmin (for perl modules for UI components). I will fix this in the next release.

Ilia's picture
Submitted by Ilia on Thu, 03/17/2016 - 23:16

So it's not the theme, right Jamie?

I don't think so - although it is odd that this doesn't happen when the old theme is used?

Ilia's picture

Maybe old themes have workaround for this?

You mentioned that you're going to fix it? What should I do?

Has it been fixed with Webmin 1.801 and Authentic 18.00?

I was shocked to see that Webmin finally updated itself. It shows the correct memory but still shows the wrong OS version.

Authentic theme will not update itself. It sat there spinning all night long and did nothing.

Trying to configure the theme yields "Access denied : User admin is not allowed to use the Webmin Configuration module"

Whoa! After the update, I can't see the webmin config module! WTH?!

Deleting everything and reinstalling helped. I was able to update the theme and I have the latest. Did you guys get this to work with PAM? Is it by design that you don't have CPU or Local Disk Space displays?

CPU and local disk should be displayed, if you're on an OS where Webmin knows how to fetch them (typically Linux or BSD).
