full monthly backup fail, this is the logged error

Hi,

I wanted full monthly backups, and it used to do them. The last few months it hasn't gone well, and in the "backup log" I see this as only error:

Copying records in DNS domain ..
No ending ) found for ( starting at 33 at /usr/share/webmin/web-lib-funcs.pl line 1397.

In the incremental backups I get the same error.

(Strange thing is that line 33 in that file is an empty line...)

What's the best way to solve this?

Thanks!

Howdy,

Hmm, which Virtualmin version is it that you're using there?

Also, if you manually run the backup from within the Virtualmin GUI, does it work then? Or do you run into the same problem?

Hi, if i run a full backup (manually) I run in the same problem. Individual server I can backup fine.

(Now trying to find Virtualmin's version somewhere ;) )

Webmin version 1.740 Virtualmin version 4.16.gpl

Thanks Eric, hope this helps ;)

Hmm, I was hoping I could say something like "upgrade to the newest version and that'll solve your problem", but that doesn't appear to be the issue here :-)

What if you go into Limits and Validation -> Validate Virtual Servers, and there run the validation feature in the "Validate Now" tab.

Does it detect any errors or problems?

Thanks Eric, for your answer.

No, I get the same message:

Failed to validate servers : No ending ) found for ( starting at 33

Hmm, that's very interesting! Sounds like there may be a bug in the configuration somewhere, though I'm not quite sure where at the moment.

I suspect it's not complaining about that web-lib-funcs.pl file, I suspect it's reporting an error it's seeing in another file, possibly in the BIND config.

Can you paste in the full output you receive when running the validate virtual servers? If it's super-long, you can show the validation information for just the one that's failing.

Hi Eric,

no, that is really all:

Beginning validation of selected virtual servers. Any problems found will be shown in red ..

Failed to validate servers : No ending ) found for ( starting at 33

<- Return to previous page

Something else I can do?

(p.s., it's not even in red ;) )

Any idea as how I should try to solve this? (getting a "weird" feeling without backups...) Thanks!

I'm really sorry for keep bumping this up, but i'm getting a bit desperate.... Really no ideas? What would you do if you had this? Thanks!

Howdy,

Okay, here's what I think I would do...

Re-reading the issue you're seeing, I think it may be saying there's a DNS error of some kind.

If you have a "sane" number of domains, what you may want to try is to go into Validate Virtual Servers, and validate them one at a time.

I'm assuming here that most of them will work fine when doing that, but maybe one or two will throw the error you're seeing (and you can stop if you discover that you get that error for every domain).

Thanks!! I'll dive into it. Thanks again!

Sat, 06/13/2015 - 10:15

hmm, so it happens only with one domain...

I'll do some tests.

Howdy,

Ah, good that you figured out which domain is the culprit!

Do you have any custom DNS entries setup for that domain?

If not, or if they can be easily re-created, what you may want to try is disabling the DNS feature, and then re-enabling it. I'm curious if there's just an errant DNS entry in there that's causing a problem.

Thanks Eric!

But it didn't do the trick. So after just disable & enable the DNS 'feature' I tried to disable and enable the server too, but I got this as well when disabling:

Can't change its mastrer zone or anything to do with dns (of this domain). I guess I have to try out where these files are and see what they look like.

well yes, it seems that file is seriously screwed. I'll try to remake it manually.

Howdy,

That's odd that there were so many problems in there! Have you ever seen problems with other domains? Or has this been the only domain to see any trouble?

I'm glad your backups are running well now though!
