How to set hostname correctly to host my websites?

Hi there guys, i have a question i hope you can help me!

I am running a CentOS 6 x86 and i wish to install Virtualmin on it with Webmin, GPL version (for now).

I am making a new vps to host my websites, I need to set my hostname correctly. I dont know very well how to do it, the default hosting provider gave me one vps with the name already set eg: vps.domain.com.

I made a fresh registration on Godaddy.com for a TLD in order to use it to set this to mine eg: vps.mydomain.com and i have made the registration of ns1 and ns2.mydomain.com pointing to the given Ip's.

When i try to make a fresh installation of Virtualmin/Webmin the vps comes with the name of my hosting provider, wich i want to change it. I need to add 2 ip's to the server and ns1 and ns2 pointing to my domain name (new TLD i made recently).

Can anyone help me with this steps? Thanks in advance!

Howdy,

So just to verify what you're saying -- you would like to change your hostname from what it is now, to "vps.mydomain.com"?

Also, did you complete the Virtualmin installation yet?

And lastly, if you run the command "hostname", what name comes up -- is it the name your VPS provider gave you?

Yes, it came up like vps.hosting-provider.com and i have not made the installation yet, i want to make it with the hostname set from the beggining if possible and then install virtualmin/webmin.

Howdy,

So set the hostname to a different name, until the next reboot, you could run:

hostname vps.mydomain.com

Then, to configure your server to set it up properly next time it reboots, you can edit /etc/sysconfig/network, and in there you can change the HOSTNAME= so that it uses your desired hostname.

Thank you for the reply i made all steps and run the installation of virtualmin/webmin all is ok but i got this message:

Virtualmin could not work out the default IPv6 address for virtual servers on your system. You will need to update either the Network interface for virtual addresses or Default virtual server IP address fields on the module configuration page.

Do i need to set the IPv6?

That message is no problem, unless you need IPv6.

Hi there, it seems i need it for the system to work i got this message when i check configuration:

External quota commands are enabled, but the command to set a user's quota is not defined or does not exist .. your system is not ready for use by Virtualmin.

Any ideia? Thanks in advance

Hi there, it seems i cannot go in to next fase wich is using the virtualmin/webmin itself, i get a message like i said on top and i cannot go over this, i dont know what to do i made already all steps (i guess), cannot figure this out...

If i need to add a IPv6 add how can i add it? Can i do that in Godaddy? any ideia?

Howdy,

You may want to get everything else working before trying to sort out IPv6.

Are you still having an issue with quotas though?

Did you by chance enable something that's not the default regarding quotas and quota support?

Also, what filesystem are you using, is it a non-typical filesystem? You can determine that by running the command "mount".

I have a question. lets say i changed my hostname in to "vps.mydomain.com what is i have 2-3 different domain running under the same vps what is the effect?
