Is there an RSS feed of this forum?

I'm really interested in Virtualmin and it would be good to scan new posts as they come. I use an RSS Reader to do this on other forums.

Is there a RSS feed of this forum's posts? Cand find a link anywhere.

Thanks

Howdy,

Sorry, there unfortunately isn't an RSS feed of the forums.

I think I can make this happen. Certainly in the next version of the site, we'll enable it.

Joe is planning an update to Drupal 7, which comes with a number of new features.

We're aware that there's some things lacking in the forums now. Joe is hoping to correct some of that in the Drupal 7 update. I'll make sure he keeps RSS on his todo list during that update process :-)

Great stuff.

Subscribing to a RSS feed of new topics (I think it should be topics and not ALL POSTS!), means subscribers can keep up to date with support and things making it easier to learn more about it. Its so much easier scanning new posts this way and seeing if anything is of interest as opposed to looking at the actual website.

@Eric: I don't think just updating to Drupal 7 will be sufficient. This forum is lacking SO many things, and so many other things don't work properly.

Missing RSS is just a minor thing compared to other stuff like terribly bad performance (with delays of 10+ seconds when making posts), missing "mark all threads as read", checking just for new FORUM thread instead of being shown all those book pages when Joe updates them, or "go to newest reply" constantly taking me to the top of the thread, so I need to manually search for new things.

Seriously, in terms of features and bugs this is the worst "forum" I've ever seen. I can, and I'm repeating myself again, only HIGHLY recommend using an actual forum software that is MADE for that purpose, and dump this Drupal stuff!!

No problem with RSS being considered less important than other issues, the forum is slow for me too. As long as its on the list :)

I still think this is required... if users subscribed to RSS feeds I think the community would join more discussions and even help each other, thus improving support on this forum.

P.S. Its still slow!

Hi,

I track these forums myself quite a bit, and thought I'd throw together a little RSS feed generator.

== FEATURES ==

  • can output in both RSS and JSON formats
  • only spiders the first page of "http://virtualmin.com/tracker"
  • only shows "Forum topics"
  • only provides updates every 5 minutes
  • only updates when someone actually requests the URL (no unnecessary spidering)

== MAKING A REQUEST ==

Point your browser, script or whatever to:

http://tpnlabs.com/vm-rss/index.php?format=rss

or

http://tpnlabs.com/vm-rss/index.php?format=json

The current version is considered experimental though works pretty good based on the initial testing.

Remember, content will only ever get re-fetched every 5 minutes so polling the script more often will not result in newer data.

*** For those who are concerned about how this will affect Virtualmin's site performance, fear not, this script is super light-weight and will only ever fetch a the live page once every 5 minutes "on-demand". ***

*** Note: the source code for this mini-script is NOT available, as I'd rather you simply point to my script in order to not put unnecessary load on the Virtualmin servers. ***

If anyone has any questions, including but not limited to Eric, Jamie, or Joe please feel free to post here or contact me using any of the details below.

Hi,

On a bit of side note, if desired I'd be happy to develop a new website for Virtualmin FREE of charge ofcourse, implementing amongst other things a "real" forum as suggested by Locutus. I too see quite a bit of performance issues with the site which I'm confident could be reduced if not eliminated if things were setup a bit better.

Let me know guys (Jamie, Joe, Eric) if this interests you. You know how to reach me :-)

With "develop" you mean code it all yourself? CMS, Forum, issue tracker, shopping system, all of that? Seriously? That's like a few months worth of work for one person I should think.

Locutus,

Yes.

Jamie, Joe, and Eric have been pretty good to me over the years, so I don't mind giving back.

It should be noted that one of my biggest clients was found through this very forum :-)
