Howdy,
I installed Virtualmin on a VM running Debian 5 with minimal configuration. I let Virtualmin's installation script decide what to install. Runs great so far.
Well, I thought I'd mention that Debian 5 just reached it's end of life last month... so there aren't any additional security updates being published for it.
I'd highly recommend using a newer distribution, such as Debian 6.
How do I get the www-less domains to work?
Where are you hosting your DNS? If you have a third party provider that hosts your DNS, you'd need to add your DNS records there. If your Virtualmin server isn't acting as your nameserver, that would certainly explain the behavior you're seeing.

My vserver provider doesn't provide any more recent operating systems -- and I'm not sure, if I can simply update to Debian 6 or anything else. The only OS my provider offers still not at end of life is Ubuntu 8.04.
Regarding the DNS: I don't have a clue. I installed Virtualmin with the intention not to care about such details. If you can tell me, what information you need to assess my situation, I'll gladly provide it. From a quick glance at the DNS records in Virtualmin, it seems that madu02.synserver.de acts as my name server. This is the internal name of my virtual machine.
If I can somehow remove the wildcard entry, I will do it. But I'm new to DNS stuff. I'm willing to learn, though.
In fact, I'm kind of frustrated. I thought, it would be a lot easier. I had simple shared webspace for several years, and it was quite easy to manage a dozen or two subdomains with it. But I need the possibility to install some software I cannot with shared webspace.

Well, I'd suggest some caution there; you could end up with some problems if you run a distro that has reached it's end of life. I might suggest giving your provider a hard time about that, as there's plenty of providers out there offering current distros.
That said, you could certainly upgrade your system to Debian 6 if you like, though that's a bit of work that one doesn't generally wish to do on a brand new install...

Well, there's some complexity to DNS. Virtualmin does what it can do hide as much of that as possible from you, but there's still some initial setup you'd need to do if you want Virtualmin to manage DNS for you.
You have two options here --
You could have a third party manage your DNS, but in that case, you'd have to manually add each DNS record any time a domain is added to your system.
You could use your Virtualmin server to manage your DNS. This is simplest over the long haul, but requires a little up front setup.
If you'd like Virtualmin to be your DNS server, check out the article here titled "How do I setup nameservers for my server". And then, once you have that all setup, you'd be all good to go!

I went to investigate where I have some DNS options to manipulate. While Virtualmin didn't show any obvious options, the configuration center my provider offers did do, but only after switching to some old version because the current config center isn't working at the moment. To make a long story short: I found the right option only by chance.
I didn't really know what to do, so I just tried -- and hoped I wouldn't break it :-). But it works now. I created an address type DNS entry with the IP of my vserver and the domain name without any subdomain or wildcard. Now I'll try if mail is working or if I have to tune my mx settings.

There seems to be a wildcard A entry in place for *.fluchtkapsel.de at the nameserver, but none for the zone itself - this is something which Virtualmin does not usually do. (I entered "abc.fluchtkapsel.de" and "blubb.fluchtkapsel.de", and it all resolves to 212.40.173.231.)
Authoritative for fluchtkapsel.de is ns1.synserver.de through ns4.synserver.de
Like Eric said, you'll have to check with the service providing DNS for that zone what they save set up there, and/or modify the DENIC entries to have your server be authoritative for the zone.

Hehe... Well yes, the intricacies of DNS can be a bit voodoo-ish, but once you get the hang of it, the magic will quickly turn white. I can surely give you some hints in that regard.
As for your current issues: I agree with Eric there. You really should not rely on a hoster that offers nothing more recent than Debian 5 and Ubuntu 8.04. Heck, in one month, Ubuntu 12.04 will come out! The other thing is 4 years old. So, first thing you should try to solve is that issue. Without a decently recent OS, I'd not even start trying to fix configuration problems.
If your hoster does not want to help you there, and you decide to look for another one: I have a good deal of free capacities on the virtual machine hosts that I operate. :) If you feel like going for a VMWare based virtual machine hosted in Germany (i.e. free choice of any OS you want), don't hesitate to contact me for details.

I made a request today regarding the OS versions. I guess, I won't get an answer before toworrow. But that's a matter that worried meines Erachtens the past few weeks -- and was just another reason for my demotivation. I don't need cutting edge versions, but current and supported versions would be nice.
If Synserver doesn't intend on updating soon, I'll consider your offer, thank you.
