Is Dovecot 2.x supported?

Hello, I am not sure whether this is the right forum for this. Is there support for Dovecot 2.x in virtualmin? Thanks so much.

Well, none of the supported distributions provide Dovecot 2.x in their repositories, so that Dovecot version hasn't been a priority.

That said -- support for Dovecot 2.x was added to Webmin version 1.540.

Thank you Andreychek.

I am running webmin 1.540. So you are saying that webmin will support Dovecot2.x but I need to find an rpm and do the install outside of webmin?

I usually webmin to update my software. i go to software packages and browse yum and do the install. However the only match for dovecot is 1.0.7-7.el5. Does this mean that I need to wait for ver 2.x to be available via this interface? or can I go ahead and download an RPM for my centos 5.6 and do the install? I am afraid to break anything in webmin.

Thank you for any valuable advice you can provide.

Yeah, that's one of the recommended ways of doing it; but that only works because your distribution vendor makes that package version in their software repository.

Since Dovecot 2.x isn't available in any supported distribution, you'd have to find an alternative way to install it.

If you're afraid of breaking anything, I'd highly recommend against trying this. Anytime you start looking for software that doesn't come with your distribution, it does risk breaking things :-)

We haven't tested what you're trying to do on your distribution. All we know is that Webmin supports the Dovecot 2.x config file format.

My recommendation would be to wait to use Dovecot 2.x until distributions start shipping with it, but that could be months or years down the road. Is there any particular feature in Dovecot 2.x that you're interested in?

Do you sleep man? :)

Thanks for responding so quickly.

Yes we have mulitple domains that each have its own SSL cert. Dovecot 1.x only supports one cert for the entire server. The only way we can use one SSL for each of the domains is to install one Dovecot install for each of the domains.

Dovecot 2.x allows one to install one SSL / domain without multiple Dovecot installations. We need this feature.

If you have any suggestions do let me know.

Thanks though for virtual/webmin.

I've occasionally been known to sleep :-)

Yeah, that is a downside of Dovecot 1.x.

Often, sysadmins will just tell customers that while their website can have a custom SSL cert, that it won't work for email... that they'd have to use the SSL cert that's installed system-wide.

For customers not okay with that, that's a good reason to sell them on buying a VPS from you :-)

If you really wish to be able to use Dovecot 2.x, then yeah, you'd have to find an RPM that will work on your distro.

If you go that route, I'd highly recommend testing it on a test server before loading a custom Dovecot version on your live server, as who knows what things might go awry when trying that :-)

Dovecot2 seems to be in RHEL6 from looking at the packages at:

http://ftp.redhat.com/pub/redhat/linux/enterprise/6Client/en/os/SRPMS/

So, I presume it HAS to be supported by Virtualmin/Webmin, if not now, very soon.

Jamie has tweaked Webmin to support the new syntax found in Dovecot 2.x.

Whenever CentOS 6 support is released, Virtualmin should work well with the Dovecot package that it comes with.
