Hi, I'm trying to setup a simple pop3 box on a server. Works fine. However, when I try to access it from thunderbird, nothing happens. The mail log says:
Apr 7 14:53:08 penghosting dovecot: pop3-login: Login: user=<info.eigenweg>, method=PLAIN, rip=88.31.49.192, lip=88.208.193.145 Apr 7 14:53:08 penghosting dovecot: POP3(info.eigenweg): Disconnected: Logged out top=0/0, retr=0/0, del=0/0, size=0
I think I've set it all up correctly at thunderbird (pop, plain text authentication etc)
smtp doesn't work either: The message could not be sent using SMTP server mail.eigenweg.nu for an unknown reason. Please verify that your SMTP server settings are correct and try again, or contact your network
I'll go and test some more, but I thought, maybe someone here recognizes this...
Thanks.
Well, it looks like in the case of your POP3 login, that it doesn't think there are any emails there. Is it possible there aren't? (perhaps that's related to the SMTP problem though)
One key might be to watch the mail logs as you attempt to send an email via SMTP, and verify that your mail client is actually hitting the server. Some ISP's block port 25, it's possible that's preventing you from actually reaching the server.
For starters -- one thing you could try is to send a test email using Usermin... you can do that by browsing to your server's IP address, using port 20000. From there, can you send a test email to yourself... and does it show up in the mailbox?

Hi Eric,
thanks for your reply.
From webmail I can send mails and they arrive. In webmail I can see mail that has been sent to the address. (Mails show up in inbox). I can download mail too, to my own mail client. So, the pop3 stuff is sorted it seems.
However, smtp still gives problems: "Sending of message failed. The message could not be sent using SMTP server mail.eigenweg.nu for an unknown reason. Please verify that your SMTP server settings are correct and try again, or contact your network administrator."
Hmm, I've now found out it's a thunderbird thing. For the smtp settings I had to set the username and password again, it doesn't take the pop3 details automatically.
So in fact, on the server everything is fine and the problems were local.
Thanks for putting me on the right track!
Glad you got it working -- thanks for the update!
-Eric
no problem
