Dovecot v1.0.15 ? No update possible ?

Hi everybody,

I'm using Virtualmin GPL since a few month ago, and I don't really understand why Virtualmin use Dovecot 1.0.15 whereas the current release is v2.0.11 !?

When I go on Webmin > System > Software Package > Installed, I can see : dovecot-common secure mail server that supports mbox and maildir mailboxes Running latest 1.0.15-2.3+lenny1 .. so Webmin consider that 1.0.15 is the last version, why ?

Is there anyway to upgrade Dovecot manually ?

Thanks.

Howdy,

Virtualmin doesn't provide Dovecot (or most software packages, for that matter) -- Dovecot is provided by your Linux distribution. Virtualmin is a control panel that sits on top of various Linux distributions and makes the software they provide work well together and easy to configure.

In general, all the Virtualmin installer does is pull in software packages that are made available by your Linux distribution's software repository.

So if you're interested in a newer Dovecot version, you'd need to work with your Linux distribution to obtain that :-)

Ok. Thanks a lot for your answer Eric.

I ask this question because there is a module called "Dovecot IMAP/POP3 Server" in Webmin ("Servers" section). This module permit to modify the Dovecot config file, set up the logins and users options, etc.. So if I update my Dovecot manually, is there any risk that this module doesn't works properly?

In the "Software Package Updates" section Webmin suggest some updates, but there is no "Dovecot" updates, why? You think it's because my Linux Distribution don't accept this new version of Dovecot?

Thanks for your patience.

Johan.

Well, the key would be to determine if there are any large differences in the config file syntax. If there are, that could prevent Virtualmin from being able to modify your Dovecot config. However, if you don't need Virtualmin to modify your Dovecot file, that may not matter too much.

Out of curiosity, is there a particular feature in Dovecot 2.x that you're interested in?

Yeah, none of the major Linux distributions have begun shipping Dovecot 2.x yet. They're generally shipping version 1.2 or older.

In your case, when Virtualmin queries the software repository for Debian Lenny, it sees that the newest version of Dovecot that Lenny provides is 1.0.x. Even the newer Debian Squeeze is only providing Dovecot 1.2. It looks like vendors consider 2.x too new to include in their distributions at the moment :-)

Hi Eric,

Thanks.

I need the quota warning and alert (notifications) and the 1.0.15 don't support this functionnalities. If I want this functionnalities without upgrade my version of Dovecot, I have to apply some patchs. And I think it's stupid to apply patch when a newer version of the software exist..

And the patchs are not complete. In the new versions of Dovecot you can send different messages when the mailbox is 70% full, 80% full, etc..

Johan.
