Webmin stopped - now modules are gone

I had to restart webmin this morning, it came up just fine but now I'm missing 80% of the functionality. Where did all of my modules go? I can't reinstall any of them because there is no configuration page. It is reporting only 1 GB of memory, I have 4GB installed.

How do I fix this?

Thanks

OK, these are a lot of different issues all banged together. You'll confuse yourself if you try to associate the memory thing with the modules thing. ;-)

Are you sure you're logged in as the root or administrative user (on Ubuntu, this would be the first user you created rather than one called "root")? A non-root user would have very restricted access to Webmin and Virtualmin menus.

Did you, by chance, make root (or the admin user) the "owner" of one of your domains? This would be a nonsensical thing to do (since root already effectively owns everything on the server), and should be impossible, but if you're using a very old version of Virtualmin, the checks to prevent it wouldn't be in place...making "root" the owner of a domain turns the Webmin root user into a Virtualmin non-privileged user with only the privileges that a domain owner would have.

As for memory...Webmin has nothing to do with memory reported by your OS; it asks the OS for memory information using free. If this is a virtual machine of some sort, the memory is set during boot. You can see what the OS thinks you have with the "free" or "top" commands.

Beyond that, you're going to need to be more specific or provide a screenshot or something. What modules are gone? What privileges do you have? What errors are you getting? What does Webmin think is happening (Virtualmin gives clues about the kind of user you're logged in as...you won't have any system-level administrative menus, for instance, and you won't see any details about other domains on the system, if you're logged in as a domain owner).

This sounds quite familiar. Haven't we already tackled this issue here? http://www.virtualmin.com/node/16562
