Installing Virtualmin into a NetBSD system

Hi. I've been using Virtualmin for a long time on GNU/Linux machines and it's always been great. Now I'm experimenting some NetBSD hosts and would love to use it there. I've installed Webmin without problems, upgraded and installed some modules. When I try to install Virtualmin, it says it can't because the OS is not supported. Since I can't find any reason why it should not work (maybe fixing some things), how could I force this installation? Thank you

Howdy,

Well, you'll see that error if the installer doesn't think it knows how to make things work.

However, if you think what the installer is doing should work, you could always manually edit the install.sh file to allow for NetBSD to run. I don't know much about how NetBSD works, but if it's similar to FreeBSD, it might be possible to modify the "freebsd" section to also run for NetBSD systems.

Though, do remember that automated installation on FreeBSD systems is only supported for Virtualmin Pro setups... if you're using Virtualmin GPL, that likely won't work right :-)

Alternatively, you could perform a manual installation, using the instructions here:

Yes, already tried with the manual installation (didn't even try the automatic script). The problem is that when I try to load the Virtualmin wbm inside Webmin, it complains about NetBSD not being supported.

Aha, I understand.

Well, I emailed Jamie to see about NetBSD support... it sounds like the issue is that Virtualmin doesn't understand how to configure the network interfaces on that particular OS. Since we don't typically get a lot of requests to use NetBSD, that hasn't been something that's received a whole lot of attention :-)

Unfortunately, that means for the time being it won't work though. Sorry!

Thanks for your reply! NetBSD network interfaces are exactly the same (and configured in the same way) as FreeBSD. Anyway, I'd love to give a hand to support NetBSD: it is a very portable OS and works in many architectures, it is safe and stable so it would be a perfect platform for hosting. So if there's anything I can do to help with the support of this OS, I'll be glad to do it.
