Website Redirects How To?

I have set up a top level server i.e. mydomain.com and then a number of aliases i.e. mydomain.co.uk

How do I set it so that if a user goes to mydomain.co.uk then the URL reverts to mydomain.com

There seems to be 2 possibilities Website Options and Website Redirects but neither are explained particularly well.

Anyone know what this is for as the documentation is missing?

Howdy,

Actually, what you may want to look into is in System Settings -> Server Templates -> Default -> Apache Website -- look for "Create alias websites by". That specifies how alias websites are added to your server, and how they will behave.

Once they're added, you can use Website Redirects to redirect from path or URL to another. This is for after the domain is added.

I am stuck on 3.78 for the moment. It appears that the Website Redirects feature is completely dysfunctional.

I am pasting in working URLs from my browser, and trying to redirect to another path on the server, like /home/domain/public_html/whatever, or to the equivalent target URL.

I get "Failed to save redirect : Missing or invalid source URL path" - which is not true, because I am loading that page in my browser, as stated. I've tried with and without a trailing slash.

It seems that there may be a "real", perhaps even accurate error message somewhere, but not sure where. Maybe the real error message is like "unable to update .htaccess" or something?

Has anyone seen this feature work? In which version of Virtualmin?

As AppleJack points out, any non-zero amount of documentation would help, because it seems to not work like he and I expect. Perhaps there could be some kind of tips on the Website Redirects screen.

BTW, I've done dozens of redirects in cPanel over years of cPanel hosting, easy as pie, never an issue.

Thanks for reading...any steps forward would be appreciated.

Well, if the Website Redirects isn't working for you, that could indicate a bug that needs looked into.

However, it's quite possible the current version fixes that... I'd suggest trying to get up to 3.80, perhaps by doing a manual update -- downloading the RPM directly from the Virtualmin repo, then installing it.

There is some chance of user error, but this form should be about as difficult as a typical email subscription form.

Based on the non-function of the Website Redirects page on my install, after manual upgrade to 3.80, it seems to still be broken...and undocumented, although, it seems simple enough.

Has anyone actually seen this "feature" work?

Jamie has committed to fix this:

Status: active ยป fixed

Ok, I see it .. in the "Source URL path" field, you just need to enter /webmail instead of the full URL.

I will fix Virtualmin to allow use of full URLs here in future though. Posted by JamieCameron on Sun, 2010-08-29 23:45
