Ubuntu 9.10 Not Supported?

This is disappointing. I eventually came across the posting Dated 11/05/2009 in the Installing Issue thread: http://www.virtualmin.com/node/12156 stating that Ubuntu 8.04 is the most recent supported version.

There were probably some tell-tale signs along the way that I didn't realize. I missed the Supported Systems page when I started the installation. I've been chasing configuration error messages down the rabbit hole for the last couple of days. Such is the way of learning things on your own.

I decided to start learning Linux network administration and reconfigured one of my Windows servers last weekend with Ubuntu 9.10. Everything went smoothly with the installation. Within a few minutes I had the server configured and running.

I learned about Webmin a few days ago and have to say I'm thrilled with the way it works. I'm setting my server up as a development environment for web site development so virtual domains are something I want configured. I learned about Virtualmin somewhere along the way and it looked like a perfect fit.

Despite all this I suspect VirtualMin may be worth the effort in the long run. I started downloading Ubuntu 8.04 a few minutes ago and will consider rebuilding the server again using the older software.

Howdy,

There were probably some tell-tale signs along the way that I didn't realize. I missed the Supported Systems page when I started the installation.

The supported distro versions are also listed in the notice that pops up when running the install.sh program... it mentioned "If your OS is not listed above, this script will fail", and you had to hit "y" to continue past that screen :-)

But yeah, only Ubuntu's LTS versions are supported by the Virtualmin installer. The good news is that includes the new LTS version coming out in April, which I believe will be version 10.04.

Ubuntu handles upgrades between LTS versions pretty well, so if you go with 8.04, it should be straight forward to jump to the next version whenever it becomes available.

Good luck!

Since Ubuntu 9.10 is not recommended, I rebuilt my server today using 8.4 LTS. I selected every server option except Postgres.

I ran the install.sh on the fresh install and I'm getting the same error that brought me here last night:

"The Suexec command on your system is configured to only run scripts under /var/www, but the Virtualmin base directory is /home. CGI and PHP scripts run as domain owners will not be executed. .. your system is not ready for use by Virtualmin."

I advice you to have a minimal OS installation and let the Virtualmin installer handle further installation of needed software. Minimal OS is no Apache, no mysql etc. Really just a basic OS.

Or you can recompile PHP with the correct SuExec paths.

Personally I prefer CentOS 5.4 over Ubuntu/Debian.

Thanks for the tip. I did the minimal installation and it worked this time.
