Using Alternate DNS Server on or with Webmin

Hello,

I'm non-hosting Webmin user who is a relative newbie to Webmin and administering a server without a completely pre-configured CP. (Our servers are strictly for our corporate use.)

I love the freedom and flexibility of Webmin (since it's a control panel where I have the control unlike others I've used) but I want to use PowerDNS as my DNS management tool. In fact, I've leased a separate VPS (which provides geographical and website redundancy, failover and other features that make it ideal for this purpose) on which I'm going to install PowerDNS and PowerAdmin to make that VPS a DNS server. That will be the only purpose for this VPS so Webmin won't be installed there. Therefore, I'd only be using the DNS servers on two dedicated servers as slave servers to that DNS server.

Is that possible with Webmin? I haven't installed BIND because I'm intent on using PowerDNS because I like its features, flexibility, etc. I've installed the Virtualmin server plugin on Webmin, along with the PDNS plugin but haven't figured out how to add a domain using that plugin.

How do I use another DNS server with or on Webmin? I need to configure two new dedis so want to get this set up on the VPS I'm using to manage some domains and the VPS I'm going to use as the DNS server before I install Webmin on the two dedis.

Thank you.

Sasha

when you have webmin on all servers you can add the servers through the webmin's "webmin server index"
Once that is done then under the BIND DNS Server module, choose "Cluster Slave Servers" and add the slaves
Then in the server template add the nameservers.

Above is the *normal* way of doing things, Im not sure if it differs when using powerdns though

What specific problem are you having with the PowerDNS module?

And, I can add that if you want DNS to be managed by Virtualmin/Webmin on the other servers, you do actually have to have Webmin running on them. At least with BIND, there's no way to create slave zones directly using BIND...so they have to be created by Webmin via RPC, and then they take care of themselves from there via traditional zone updates. I don't think PowerDNS is any different, but I've never used it, so I don't know.
