Bleeding edge

From the posts I've read here, the moderators suggest that updating php via the bleeding edge repository is somehow unsafe, untested, etc.

Can you explain to me why? Isn't this the same as building from source? Doesn't PHP do the testing?..

Yeah, I mean, there's nothing inherently wrong with them.

But whatever it is that Joe compiles for the bleeding edge repository does get much less testing than the version that comes vendor packaged in a distribution.

His primary concern is also maintaining the main Virtualmin repository, so there's no guarantee that updates will come out immediately and such.

You know, just the standard disclaimers :-)

If you want to use it, go right ahead! Joe does :-)

Well, I only needed json_encode/decode. So I installed the PECL extension. I suppose that's the better way of handling this? :)
