Installing Virtualmin Pro Fails

EDIT

What am I doing wrong?

It looks like my 2 errors at this point are:

[code:1]rhinov:~# apt-get install libapache2-mod-ruby: Reading package lists... Done Building dependency tree... Done E: Couldn't find package libapache2-mod-ruby: rhinov:~# apt-get install libcrypt-ssleay-perl Reading package lists... Done Building dependency tree... Done Some packages could not be installed. This may mean that you have requested an impossible situation or if you are using the unstable distribution that some required packages have not yet been created or been moved out of Incoming.

Since you only requested a single operation it is extremely likely that the package is simply not installable and a bug report against that package should be filed. The following information may help to resolve the situation:

The following packages have unmet dependencies: libcrypt-ssleay-perl: Depends: libc6 (>= 2.5-5) but 2.3.6.ds1-13etch7 is to be installed Depends: libssl0.9.8 (>= 0.9.8e-1) but 0.9.8c-4etch3 is to be installed E: Broken packages [/code:1]

I have a lisence and am using the copy pasted command line to install Virtual min and it fails as such, what am I missing? It was failing worse until I added universe repos:

deb http://ca.archive.ubuntu.com/ubuntu/ hardy universe deb-src http://ca.archive.ubuntu.com/ubuntu/ hardy universe deb http://ca.archive.ubuntu.com/ubuntu/ hardy-updates universe deb-src http://ca.archive.ubuntu.com/ubuntu/ hardy-updates universe

And imported the keys for those repos. It got to the same point but with more errors. So now I am at this: [code:1] Resolving software.virtualmin.com... 70.86.4.226 Connecting to software.virtualmin.com|70.86.4.226|:80... connected. HTTP request sent, awaiting response... 200 OK Length: unspecified [text/plain]

Welcome to the Virtualmin Professional installer, version 1.0.0

The installation is quite stable and functional when run on a freshly installed supported Operating System, but upgrades from existing .wbm- based systems, or systems that already have Apache VirtualHost directives or mail users, will very likely run into numerous problems. Please read the Virtualmin Installation guide before proceeding if your system is not a freshly installed and supported OS.

This script is not intended to update your system! It should only be used to install Virtualmin Professional, on a supported OS. If you have previously installed Virtualmin via this script or the GPL version of this script, upgrades and updates should be handled within Virtualmin itself. Once Virtualmin is installed, you never need to run this script again.

The systems currently supported by install.sh are: Fedora Core 5-8 on i386 and x86_64 CentOS and RHEL 3-5 on i386 and x86_64 OpenSUSE 10.0 on i586 and x86_64 Debian 3.1 and 4.0 on i386 and amd64 Ubuntu 6.06 LTS and 8.04 LTS on i386 and amd64 FreeBSD 7-RELEASE on i386 and amd64

If your OS is not listed above, this script will fail. More details about the systems supported by the script can be found here:

Hello,

I'd go ahead and post the above over in the ticket tracker:

http://www.virtualmin.com/bug-tracker/

Whenever you do that, be sure to include what distribution you're using.

It looks like something on your system is a bit confused, I see references to both Etch (which is Debian) and Hardy (which is Ubuntu). I suspect that confusion is causing some trouble in resolving what packages to install.

Thanks,
-Eric

SO being so new to this, how long can I expect to see this ticket to be worked on?

Thanks again for all your help on this, at least I know I was doing something wrong and found out where.

Hi Wade,

Well, I'm hoping the exact problem will stand out to Joe or Jamie. They're generally pretty quick to respond. If they don't, though, I'll look into it a bit more myself.

Have a good one!

Well Im a newb so here is where the confusion probably lies

[code:1]

I am runnind debian 4.0 according to /etc/debian_versions

Well, those last 4 lines are probably the issue.

So, I'd start off by commenting those out :-)

Also, I see a reference in your output above to "packages.medibuntu.org" -- I'd also comment that out as well.

Then, if you run "apt-get update" from the command line, and re-run the installation, does that help? You had said you ran into issues prior to adding those "universe" lines -- if you run into those again, let us know what they are, that's something we should be able to resolve :-)

okay my only sources are now:

deb-src http://ftp3.nrc.ca/debian/ etch main
deb http://security.debian.org/ etch/updates main contrib
deb-src http://security.debian.org/ etch/updates main contrib
[/code:1]

But when I try and clean my apt-get and update it, it still does the hardy updates :(

Well, it's seeing a medibuntu repository in there somewhere (which wasn't one of the 4 lines you commented out).

What output do you get if you type the following from the command line:

find /etc/apt/ | xargs grep medibuntu

Ahhhh, I've commented out:
deb http://packages.medibuntu.org/ hardy free non-free

I will apt-update and try install and post my results.

Well I don't understand, I've commented out that one line you found for me, and tried to totally clean out the apt-get and it is still pulling hardy updates for some reason:

any ideas?

Wait sorry, my bad, I didn't properly comment them out.

Will be back with more results. (Edit post errors out for me so sorry for multiple replies)

Okay, there we go, we're closer to the root of the problem :-)

So, here's what you should do --

Open a new ticket in the ticket tracker:

http://www.virtualmin.com/bug-tracker/

Post the above error, a link to this forum post, and most importantly, attach a copy of this file:

/root/virtualmin-install.log

It will hopefully contain some further info on what's going on.

Thanks!

Joe's picture

This looks like a combination of problems, caused by the multiple failed installs when you were starting out with a botched repo configuration. But, I think the most obvious issue is that our module packaging script for debian is still broken (it ignores the --allow-overwrite flag, and refuses to overwrite existing modules...I was sure Jamie fixed this months ago, so I'm baffled that it persists...or maybe I forgot to include that option when I was building the packages...but that would mean it's my fault, and I don't like to think about that, so let's keep blaming Jamie).

To fix it...I guess uninstall those modules individually using dpkg and then start again. If you've filed a ticket, I'll get to it shortly, and I can fix things for you, if you like.

I can take a look at that Joe. Thanks for the input.
