You'll need port 53 and high ports available for transfers to work, so a firewall could thwart zone transfers, even if the Virtualmin slave DNS setup is happening.
I am, of course, assuming you've read the documentation for setting up a DNS slave here:
If you have setup your dns servers correctly it should do this automatically.
If you don't understand DNS I would go google and read up on the docs.

Speaking of port 53 -- you need tcp and udp open for that port.
Zone transfers are done under udp connections.
