Hi,
I expect this is a known issue, but cannot find a resolution.
My users cannot send mail because Postfix and SASL auth are not playing nice.
O/S - Ubuntu 7.04
Error from logs: Nov 28 10:12:41 platypus postfix/smtpd[32146]: warning: pppxxx-xx.static.internode.on.net[xxx.xxx.xxx.xxx]: SASL PLAIN authentication failed: generic failure Nov 28 10:13:38 platypus postfix/smtpd[19922]: warning: SASL authentication failure: cannot connect to saslauthd server: No such file or directory Nov 28 10:13:38 platypus postfix/smtpd[19922]: warning: SASL authentication failure: Password verification failed
Any suggestion as to how to fix this would be appreciated. I have dome very distressed users.
Thanks, Neill
Have a look at this script:
http://software.virtualmin.com/lib/mail-setup.pl
It's probably not going to run unmodified on Ubuntu 7.04 (it's only tested on supported platforms), but it'll give you an idea what needs to be done to make things work. It's reasonably well-commented, and the sasl sections are pretty easy to find.

I also posted instructions for Debian ages ago here in the forums, which should apply to Ubuntu pretty close to unmodified (though Debian/Ubuntu seems to change the PARAMS setting to some other name in /etc/default/saslauthd with every new version).
