Sun Server

They are throwing away a sun server at work, complete with a bunch of Scuzzie 9 gig drives and memory. It was new in 1998. I wonder if I should snag it. Or if Joe or Jamie would want it? Its on casters and is about 2 1/2 ' by 2 1/2'.

I mean Solarus 10. Obviously I don't know a lot about the server, except we used to run our business on it.

My post got duplicated when I clicked the back button, and then it got messed up when I edited it.

Here is my original post.

At work they are throwing away a sun server that we bought around in 1998. It is currently running Solaris 7, but they said at work it could run Solaris 10. It has a bunch of 9 gig scuzzy drives, and all the memory. It should boot when plugged in. It is about 2 1/2 feet tall by 2 1/2 wide and is on casters.

I know VirtualMin has a Sun version, so I was offering it to Joe and Jamie for free, but they would have to arrange to have it picked up in Detroit. Shipping is too expensive and too big a hassle for me to attempt.

It's just a thought.

Wow. Big box. At 9 years old, it's probably as powerful as an iPhone. Or maybe my Sidekick II. ;-)

Jamie's got a couple of Sun boxes given to him for Webmin development by Sun (he's worked for Sun several times over the years). So we've got Solaris dev boxes here. You might want to grab it to play with it for a while, if you wanted to get some Sun on Sparc experience. They're interesting, but with 9 years of age on it, you won't find it a very economical use of space, power, or cooling. But these days, you can get Solaris on x86, and get real "UNIX" experience without the hassle of proprietary hardware.

For all the reasons you just listed, that's why I left it in the junk pile at work. But I thought I'd ask.

My home office is outfitted with all the stuff they have thrown out at work. I have 6 foot racks, one nice server box with 5 removeable drive bays, a 3com 3300 switch 10/100. I have 5 switches as backkups too in case one blows. There are more switches at work too, but you can't hardly sell them on Ebay. They are big with noisy fans.

It currently is running (was running ) System 7, but someone at work said it could run system 10.
