I have setup the default server template, under "Status monitoring", to send the monitoring messages to my address, and set "Send email to server owner?" to No. However, all status monitoring that Virtualmin sets up get the owner email address set up in addition to mine, which I do not want and is explicitly configured not to happen.

Did you create the virtual servers for which this is happening before or after changing that template setting?
Because templates in Virtualmin only apply to newly created domains.

Oh to be honest I don't remember if and when I changed that option. Whad I did notice however is that on the other templates I had the "From default settings" which greyed out the other options but made "Send email to server owner?" set to Yes which made me suspicious, so now I set the options explicitly on all templates. Is there a way I can apply the setting for existing domains?

You can apply this to existing domains by disabling and then re-enabling the status monitoring feature for them.

Actually that is what I did. In fact, I did not have monitoring enabled for any domain. Then I disabled all again, and re-enabled just one after altering each template, but still the domain owner address was added to the monitoring recipients.

Odd, this works fine on our test systems.
What output do you get from the command :
grep statusonly /etc/webmin/virtual-server/config

Ok, that's what it should be.
If you go to Webmin -> Others -> System and Server Status and click on the monitor for the domain, does it show the domain owner's address in the "Also send email for this service to" field?

yes

If you turn off the status monitoring feature for a domain (on the Edit Virtual Server page), does the entry for the domain disappear from Webmin -> Others -> System and Server Status ?

I found out what the problem was. The server template for sub-servers has the "from default settings" option. However, that seems to disregard the "Send email to server owner?" option being set to no in the main template. So now I had to specify it explicitly and all is fine.

Ok, that would explain it.
