Hello again,
I realize this problem has launched several discussions in recent years (2006: http://www.virtualmin.com/node/5317; 2009: https://www.virtualmin.com/node/10623; 2011: https://www.virtualmin.com/node/16751). However, as far as I understood many of those discussions would not have been launched if there had been two options giving the master admin the choice to enable automatic creation of the Maildir subdirectories at virtual server creation (for the virtual server administrator) and at user creation (for users of virtual servers).
I my case, it would facilitate the setup of IMAP accounts in Thunderbird, if all standard subdirectories were created immediately.
Best regards,
fuggi

So are you looking for a way to customize the sub-directories used for spam and other purposes (like trash and drafts), and have them created at virtual server / mailbox creation time?

Customization would be even better. But for now I (and obviously many other admins, too) would appreciate an option which triggers the creation of default subdirectories at virtual server resp. user creation time. Thus, admins would take notice of this issue as early as the setting up of the basic server configuration (which includes Webmin and Virtualmin settings) and not only when testing their e-mail accounts.

I had a look at the Virtualmin code, and it appears that when using Maildir with sub-folders created under
~/Maildir
, the.spam
,.trash
and.virus
sub-directories are already created automatically. Is this not happening on your system? If you have set a custom spam delivery location at Server Configuration -> Spam and Virus Delivery, that should be used instead of.spam
Also, is there any case in which the admin wouldn't want those created?

Hi Jamie,
thanks for your follow-up! That's interesting, because only a subdirectory for trash (in my cases always
.trash
) out of those subdirecties you mentioned are created automatically at server/user creation time. No subdirectories for spam, viruses (set to delete such e-mails), and additionally no subdirectories for sent mails and drafts are created automatically regardless of the exact naming.Based on the discussions I referred to in my first post I guess no admin wouldn't want thoses subdirectories to be created automatically.
Best regards,

I had a look at the Virtualmin code again, and noticed that it doesn't create
sent
ordrafts
folders - I'll add that in the next release. The
spam
andvirus
folders should be created though, as long as the domain has spam and virus filtering enabled?Submitted by fuggi on Wed, 08/01/2012 - 04:59 Comment #6
Ok, I had a closer look at the spam and virus folder issue and what I can definitively say is that there are no virus directories created in any server owner or user account, although virus filtering was enabled for all (but set to delete e-mail containing a virus). And
.spam
subdirectories are only created for users at user creation time, but not for virtual server owners at the time of virtual server creation, although spam filtering was enabled from the beginning either.Submitted by fuggi on Wed, 01/15/2014 - 07:10 Comment #7
Seems to be solved with the current Virtualmin version on my systems. The subdirectories
.drafts
,.sent
,.spam
, and.trash
are created automatically at both virtual server and user creation. Thanks a lot!
